Daisy Ridley Explains Why She’s ‘Cut Off Like A Skywalker Limb’ From Social Media

Daisy Ridley sat down with BuzzFeed News’ YouTube morning show “AM to DM” to discuss her latest role in “Ophelia”, a fresh take on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, as told through the perspective of the doomed title character.

In addition, the “Star Wars” actress, 27, also discussed her decision to step away from social media due to the intense criticism directed toward her for the simple reason that her protagonist in the wildly popular sci-fi franchise is female.

“I honestly think now with social media and stuff… it’s great to have freedom of expression, but I do feel like people think opinions have so much weight,” she admitted.

“I don’t really think bad vibes should have the sun shone on them,” she added. “Like, I don’t want to read your thing!”

Asked if she would ever consider returning to social media, she said she’ll remain “cut off like a Skywalker limb” from Instagram, Facebook and the like.

“Also, when I want to see what my pals are up to, you can just Google it and go to Instagram,” she joked.

In a 2017 interview with Radio Times, Ridley said she had come to believe social media isn’t the best thing for one’s mental health.

“The more I read about teenage anxiety, the more I think it’s highly unhealthy for people’s mental health,” she said. “It’s such a weird thing for young people to look at distorted images of things they should be.”
