Black Widow’s Scarlett Johansson says the movie is a “family drama”

We’re not quite sure when we’re finally going to get to see Marvel’s Black Widow movie, but Scarlett Johansson says the film will surprise fans when it’s finally released.

Speaking to Total Film, Johansson described the film as a “family drama”, which isn’t really what we expected, and added that it was the last thing you’d expect for the Natasha Romanoff character.

“One of the themes of the film is family,” Johansson explained.

“What is family? How does it define us? How does our past define us? How does our family – however we define it – make up who we are, for better or worse?

“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of,” she continued.

The star added: “The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”

Last month, Johansson admitted that if this movie is her last outing as Black Widow, she’s happy with the story they have told.

“Natasha’s almost forced to come to terms with her past,” she said while speaking to Empire.

“It’s ultimately about healing those deep wounds. We were definitely not just going to give the fans some, like, spy/assassins movie.”

Black Widow was originally set to be released on May 1
