Duchess Meghan speaks out about the importance of education for girls

Less than a week after giving birth to her first child, Duchess Meghan is working on her mission to advocate for broader rights for women and girls around the world. ET reports the new mom appeared in a pre-recorded message at a gala in New York City on Thursday, May 9, to raise money and awareness for The Campaign for Female Education (CFED), one of multiple women’s rights advocacy groups the former actress has been working with since she married Prince Harry. CFED’s goal is to “break the cycle of poverty and inequality in rural Africa by educating girls and investing in economic and leadership opportunities for young women,” according to its website. “As I said on International Women’s Day, a girl who is educated becomes a woman who is influential,” Meghan said in her message, which was received with cheers, according to ET. She added that the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust hopes to identify, support and connect leaders in the field. The Trust is the same group that organized a panel Meghan appeared on during International Women’s Day in March. “When women miss out on careers, education or opportunities because of the system that they live in,” she said at the time, “we all suffer.”
