{"id":18943,"date":"2018-07-08T18:59:14","date_gmt":"2018-07-08T14:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nasimword.ir\/?p=18943"},"modified":"2018-07-08T18:59:14","modified_gmt":"2018-07-08T14:29:14","slug":"berlin-winner-jasmila-zbanic-on-her-collaborative-approach-to-filmmaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nasimword.ir\/?p=18943&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Berlin Winner Jasmila Zbanic on Her Collaborative Approach to Filmmaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nasimword.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AAzJzvW.png\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18944\" src=\"http:\/\/nasimword.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AAzJzvW.png\" alt=\"AAzJzvW\" width=\"799\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nasimword.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AAzJzvW.png 799w, https:\/\/nasimword.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AAzJzvW-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/nasimword.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/AAzJzvW-768x433.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bosnian filmmaker\u00a0Jasmila Zbanic, whose debut feature, \u201cGrbavica,\u201d won the Berlinale Golden Bear in 2006, was at the\u00a0Karlovy Vary Film Festival\u00a0this week to present a masterclass for the 10 film students and graduates taking part in EFP Future Frames, a fest section that screened their short films.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Zbanic, whose other films include \u201cOn the Path\u201d and \u201cFor Those Who Can Tell No Tales,\u201d spoke to the students about her early career experiences and approach to filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Zbanic started her film education at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo at a terrible time for her home city, during the siege by the Serb army, which ran from April 1992 to February 1996. Despite the enormous difficulties and dangers, Zbanic said the passion for film and other forms of culture felt by the Sarajevo students and other citizens was stronger than ever. \u201cYou find out you need films and culture like bread in this extreme situation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As the existing socialist system of government in Bosnia broke down, the Sarajevo filmmakers and other artists were compelled to create their own structures, forming an \u201cassociation of artists\u201d called Deblokada in 1997. \u201cWe reinvented the way we worked,\u201d she said. They opened a video store in Sarajevo to fund their work, and set out to build a network of international contacts. Zbanic, for example, found support for one of her documentary shorts from French-German cultural channel Arte, and this led to invitations to film festivals, where her network of contacts grew. \u201cFestivals and networks are really important\u201d for young filmmakers, she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The group was open to suggestions. \u201cWhatever people advised [us to do], we did,\u201d she said. As resources in Bosnia following the war were scant, international co-production was a necessity, but it also benefited the films as it compelled the filmmakers to tell their stories in a way that could be understood by audiences in other countries. Austrian production company Coop99, for example, co-produced \u201cGrbavica\u201d with Deblokada, along with Croatia\u2019s Jadran, Germany\u2019s Noirfilm Filmproduktion and broadcaster ZDF. Germany\u2019s The Match Factory handled international sales.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Zbanic had wanted to document the way rape had been used as a weapon in the Bosnian War. Although she considered investigating the issue as a documentary she didn\u2019t want to make the women relive their ordeal. This led her to adopt a fictionalized narrative approach, and the making of her debut narrative feature, \u201cGrbavica,\u201d set many years after the conflict. Her films \u201calways start with huge emotion,\u201d she said, but \u201cmust find their own form.\u201d It was when her daughter was born that the way into the story became clear to her. Experiencing the enormous love for her child, \u201cborn out of love,\u201d she wondered what it would be like for a woman if their child was \u201cborn out of hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Zbanic cast a well-known actress in the lead role, Mirjana Karanovic, who read the script and loved it. Although some people thought Karanovic was too well known, Zbanic disagreed, and says now that young filmmakers should always try to work with \u201cthe best\u201d in every field. \u201cAlways get the best, people who know more than you do,\u201d she said. She had always found such people to be \u201cwonderful with beginners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Initially the Berlin Film Festival had rejected the film without viewing it.
