But I think \u2018Black Panther\u2019 stands on its own merits regardless of its popularity as being a wonderful piece of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cRyan Coogler is an artist,\u201d Brown continued. \u201cThe man is three for three in his films thus far, and I don\u2019t see him striking out anytime soon. So whether it\u2019s in one category, the other, or both, the movie is worthy of recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">His sentiments echo those of many who\u2019ve weighed in on the new category, saying it may give the Academy an excuse to leave commercially successful but still artistically meritorious films out of the best picture category in favor of more typical\u00a0Oscars\u00a0fare \u2014 and that, practically, the addition\u00a0doesn\u2019t make sense.\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u2018s awards editor Kristopher Tapley termed it \u201cdesperate.\u201d Of \u201cBlack Panther\u201d particularly, he wrote: \u201cDisney has taken the task of bringing Ryan Coogler\u2019s critically acclaimed Marvel film into the Oscar fold quite seriously this year. A consultancy team was assembled early and that group has been laying the track ever since.
