Which is why the star and executive producer of Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Maniac<\/em>-and face of Louis Vuitton\u2019s new fragrance-requested that she be interviewed by her longtime pal Jennifer Lawrence (who calls her by her real name,Emily). The two got together in New York to discuss Emma\u2019s new project, living life in the public eye, and turning the big 3-0.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Lawrence: Okay, let\u2019s get things started! Emily, you\u2019re the best. Care to comment?<\/h3>\n

Emma Stone: Um, oh God. Uh, no comment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Next: You\u2019re so pretty. How\u2019d you get like that?<\/h3>\n

[Laughs<\/em>] What\u2019s the Bridesmaids line you always say?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

That you smell like pinecones and you look like Cinderella. Care to comment?<\/h3>\n

She says that to me all the time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Interviewing is very nerve-racking! I\u2019m just gonna start with my list. So, Emily, you and I have never talked about acting because we\u2019re not douchelords. So now we should talk about acting.<\/h3>\n

Okay.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

When you act, do you use your imagination? Do you use wounds from the past?<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s a good question!<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I know; I\u2019m a great interviewer.<\/h3>\n

Well, I tend to use a lot of stuff that has actually happened in my life, and I pull from feelings that came with certain experiences. Then it at least feels productive to have all these feelings [laughs], which is why I started acting in general. And I guess I use my imagination to an extent.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

So you can make yourself cry purely just from imagining something horrible? You\u2019re that sensitive?<\/h3>\n

Jen.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I know you, but I have to ask for the people who don\u2019t know you. Emily, are you sensitive?<\/h3>\n

I am sensitive on a level that is problematic.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Emily blushes watching TV. She blushes for someone on TV.<\/h3>\n

[Laughs<\/em>] I mean, I\u2019ve talked to my therapist about it before, and she\u2019s like, Thank God you found [acting].<\/p>\n

<\/div>

An outlet.<\/h3>\n

I started acting in youth theater when I was 11. But it\u2019s weird when it becomes your job. And then there are other parts of it, like sitting here with the tape recorder in between us, that aren\u2019t things that you think about when you\u2019re a kid and it\u2019s just like, ‘This is a safe, great place to feel a lot.’<\/p>\n

You seem to take something like anxiety or pain and you turn it into something. You take all your, what do you call them, your-<\/h3>\n

Demons?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Your demons, and you use them for good.<\/h3>\n

Honestly, turning 30-because I\u2019m turning 30 in a couple of months-I know people talk about, like, turning 30 and the experience of that.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Thirty, flirty, and thriving!<\/h3>\n

[Laughs<\/em>] My twenties were a really interesting time, and there\u2019s been a lot that has happened in these past 10 years, both positive and not as positive. It\u2019s weird how much turning 30 crystallizes your life. Instead of just living the dreams that I had in my youth and getting to do the job that I love to do and making friends and going through all of that, it\u2019s like, Now what do I actively want as an adult?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Yeah, what do you want from the world?<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s been an interesting thing to ruminate on. I love to ruminate.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You love ruminating.<\/h3>\n

I can\u2019t really help it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Has any fruit come from it?<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s occasional fruit.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Do you care to talk about it?<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s occasional fruit, and then there are frequent sleepless nights.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Oh yeah. I get those phone calls. I feel so bad when I have to call her with bad news. I\u2019m like, \u201cEverything\u2019s okay.\u201d [Sinister voice] But it\u2019s not.<\/h3>\n

Oh God.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

What do you think caused your anxiety? Do you think you were born like that, or do you think something happened that made you extremely sensitive, or do you think that you\u2019re naturally pathetic?<\/h3>\n

I think that it\u2019s a combination of all of it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Do you remember a time when you felt more anxious than you ever had?<\/h3>\n

Yeah, when I was seven. That\u2019s when I started having panic attacks, which I\u2019ve talked about pretty extensively. I think your wiring is just kind of what you are. My mom always says that I was born with my nerves outside of my body. But I\u2019m lucky for the anxiety, because it also makes me high-energy.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You\u2019re actually very adventurous. And you\u2019re laid-back. I know that would surprise you to hear, but I know you to be laid-back. Until you\u2019re not. And then when you\u2019re not, you\u2019re really not.<\/h3>\n

I think a huge part of it is that I really like being alive. I haven\u2019t shot anything for six months, which has been amazing because there\u2019s been time to be with friends or travel.<\/p>\n

I notice that you bring up friendship a lot.<\/h3>\n

Ha.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Is that important to you?<\/h3>\n

No.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Who\u2019s your favorite friend?<\/h3>\n

I really like [Lawrence\u2019s dog] Pippi.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

She has a personality!<\/h3>\n

I love Pippi\u2019s mom.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

So are friends important to you? And why?<\/h3>\n

I think friendship is pretty much everything. Here\u2019s another turning-30 thing I\u2019ve realized: You pick your family. You realize that your friendships, the people who go with you into these next phases of your life- you\u2019re choosing your family.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

And what\u2019s most important to you in friendship?<\/h3>\n

Loyalty is enormous.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Oh, I love that you pointed at me.<\/h3>\n

You\u2019ve been one of my most loyal friends for years. And I think knowing that you can laugh together and that not everything has to be such a big deal.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

How do you view professional mistakes?<\/h3>\n

There are definitely things that I\u2019ve beat myself up about. Ha, surprise, surprise, that\u2019s the theme of the interview.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Doesn\u2019t it suck that we have to learn lessons publicly?<\/h3>\n

It feels like a lot of people have to learn lessons publicly now because of the way the world is wired.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You mean social media?<\/h3>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

Speaking of, you don\u2019t have a big social media presence. Thoughts? Why not?<\/h3>\n

Wow, that was an amazing segue.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I know; I\u2019m getting the hang of this.<\/h3>\n

I think it wouldn\u2019t be a positive thing for me. If people can handle that sort of output and input in the social media sphere, power to them.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

What kinds of things do you let roll off your back?<\/h3>\n

What I wear, how I look. I struggled a couple of years ago with feeling like how I looked was being scrutinized, and then I realized that anything that really bothers me that people could comment on is something I\u2019m already worried about. So it\u2019s not really something that I\u2019m overthinking right now. But in a different period, if I was feeling bad about something, it would bother me much more to hear people talking about it.<\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/h3>\n

Again, nobody really gives a s— at the end of the day except for me. [Laughs]\n

<\/div>

Unfortunately, people do give a s—.<\/h3>\n

Well, for like 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

About you, not me. [Both laugh] What movie changed your life? Care to take a gander? Obviously the best movie ever made was\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em>. We all know that.<\/h3>\n

But I wasn\u2019t in that, Jen. I\u2019m not Laura Dern, as much as I want to be.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You were amazing with the triceratops.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s not me! I wish it were me, but it\u2019s not me.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You look so good in khaki shorts. [Both laugh] What role did you play that had the biggest impact on you personally?<\/h3>\n

I loved doing\u00a0Paper Man<\/em>. It was about 10 years ago. That was an intense time in my life. I had just turned 20. All these pieces fit together, and it was a really impactful time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

For the record, note that she said \u201cpizzas,\u201d not \u201cpieces.\u201d<\/h3>\n

[Laughs] All the pizzas fit together.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Did you ever think you would win an Oscar? Which apparently you\u2019ve done.<\/h3>\n

No.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

We were talking one night and I was, like, passionately speaking about something and said, \u201cEmily, you\u2019ve been nominated for two Academy Awards!\u201d And she goes, \u201cJen, I won.\u201d And I was like, \u201cYou did!?\u201d<\/h3>\n

ES and JL: [Both say] Congratulations!<\/p>\n

ES: She was one of the first people to reach out to me when it happened, but she just blocked it out. You had to block it out. [Both laugh]\n

<\/div>

What\u2019s the biggest blessing and what\u2019s the biggest drag of your j-o-b? And also, what\u2019s your perspective on it? I think about my parents, and how I grew up in a working-class family. That\u2019s why I hate working with people who don\u2019t come out of their trailers or are late. It\u2019s a job!<\/h3>\n

Me too. That drives me nuts. Lack of professionalism makes me really insane.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

What are other things that get your goat?<\/h3>\n

[Laughs<\/em>] I don\u2019t like the idea that anybody thinks that this is, like, special. There\u2019s nothing to complain about. The fact that anyone could think that [fame] is true or special….<\/p>\n

<\/div>

What you\u2019re saying is, you see behind the curtain; you\u2019ve seen Oz.<\/h3>\n

Exactly. My job is fun and it\u2019s wonderful and it can be hard, but it\u2019s also like, But how hard can it be? [JL laughs<\/em>] You know what I mean?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I really wish we could include your arm gestures.<\/h3>\n

There are really hard jobs in the world, like\u00a0really\u00a0<\/em>hard, and everyone is being so nice to me and bringing me a coffee. Like, calm down. Are you serious?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I brought you a coffee! You\u2019re a movie star; what else am I gonna do? [ES laughs<\/em>] I had to make you a coffee.<\/h3>\n

[Fancy voice<\/em>] I\u2019m so glad you noticed. I\u2019m very important.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Have you ever gone through a spell in your life where you\u2019ve felt that you\u2019d lost grip on yourself?<\/h3>\n

Oh my God, I went through that last night. [JL laughs<\/em>] When I was a teenager, I was in a real sweet spot. Then in my mid-twenties, I really lost the plot. A lot of things shifted, and it felt like whatever that protective layer was, that mask that you build for yourself-this is my personality, this is who I am-totally shattered.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

What shattered? Security?<\/h3>\n

The structure of my life shifted so much that I didn\u2019t know how to relate to this new version, you know? My parents got divorced, and I went through this stuff with my career really starting. It all happened at once.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

It\u2019s so much more helpful to talk about your life in a realistic way instead of having these false realities. Like, if I look skinny in a dress, that\u2019s probably because I was watching what I ate. I didn\u2019t eat a whole pizza and fit into a size 2! [ES laughs<\/em>] I find it irritating when people make their lives look perfect. I remember when you were first talking about anxiety and reading that and being like, \u201cMe too.\u201d And then I didn\u2019t feel like such an a—— for bringing it up. You look at the world realistically.<\/h3>\n

You do.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

You do.<\/h3>\n

You do! Let\u2019s just say \u201cYou do\u201d until the end of time, and that\u2019ll be the whole article.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Wait! We need to talk about\u00a0Maniac<\/em>.<\/h3>\n

The thing I liked about\u00a0Maniac\u00a0<\/em>was that it\u2019s about people who have their own internal struggles and are trying to fix them with a pill. But you see over the course of the show that human connection and love is really the only thing that gets us through life. I liked that idea, and I love Jonah [Hill]. I had worked with him on the first movie I ever did [Superbad<\/em>], so it was, like, 11 years later.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

So when you met him, was he, like, a big deal?<\/h3>\n

I was 17.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

And you were nobody?<\/h3>\n

[Laughs and changes voice<\/em>] I was a nobody. I was a\u00a0nobody<\/em>. It was really early on for him, too. [JL gets interrupted by a call from her dad, promises to call him back<\/em>]\n

<\/div>

He never calls me, so I could not ignore that.<\/h3>\n

Do you know that her dad makes jam?<\/p>\n

<\/div>

He makes blackberry jam. But he only makes it for people if they\u2019re really going to eat it.<\/h3>\n

She was like, \u201cMy dad wants to know if you want some of the jam, but only if you\u2019re really going to eat it, because he doesn\u2019t want to waste a label on you.\u201d It was so good.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s so cute.<\/h3>\n

Truly the sweetest, it\u2019s heartbreaking. Wait, what was I saying?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember. Oh, Jonah!<\/h3>\n

Right! Obviously lots of things have happened in the past 11 years, so it was nice to just get to be around each other.<\/p>\n

On another note: You have a beautiful voice, but you hate to sing.<\/h3>\n

I don\u2019t hate to sing! I love to sing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

But you were talking about something recently, and you were like, \u201cBut it\u2019s musical.\u201d We went to see you in\u00a0Cabaret\u00a0<\/em>[on Broadway] and you were like, \u201cI was awful.\u201d I feel like you don\u2019t.<\/h3>\n

The night that Jen came to see me in\u00a0Cabaret<\/em>, both of my contacts popped out of my eyes.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s blind as a bat.<\/h3>\n

It was so weird. I\u2019ve never had that happen in my whole life.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I would have never noticed. My jaw was on the floor the entire time; I couldn\u2019t believe what I was seeing.<\/h3>\n

You\u2019re the best, Mom.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

I want an album from you of lullabies.<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ll record an album for just you. We\u2019ll do \u201990s country music!<\/p>\n

Oh my God! Will you make me a \u201990s country album? [Starts singing \u201cWho I Am\u201d by Jessica Andrews<\/em>] \u201cI am Rosemary\u2019s granddaughter.\u201d I want that one!<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s your favorite.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll do that. Okay, so you do like to sing. Do you like to dance?<\/h3>\n

I love to dance.<\/p>\n

Really? God, you and I couldn\u2019t be more different. Why do you like to dance?<\/h3>\n

Because it\u2019s the most fun thing in the world.<\/p>\n

Do you learn dances quickly?<\/h3>\n

Dance is my very favorite art form to watch.<\/p>\n

F—ing miserable. I can\u2019t learn choreography. It doesn\u2019t click in my mind. The pizzas don\u2019t come together.<\/h3>\n

The pizzas do not work.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll watch somebody do something and then I\u2019m like, ‘But how\u2019d you get your arm over here?’ I would watch my choreographer and be like, ‘But your head just did a 360. I can\u2019t do that.’<\/h3>\n

You just fully exorcised it.<\/p>\n

I put on\u00a0Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary<\/em>. Bridget Jones feels me. I had one night of horrible insomnia, like random insomnia. I watched\u00a0Bridget Jones<\/em>.<\/h3>\n

I started\u00a030 Rock<\/em>, and that\u2019s been a pretty good one.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s nice. We all need some Tina Fey. Do you want to be back on set again? Or are you kind of at peace with not working right now?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m at peace. I think it\u2019s been a good time to get a little perspective, because things were so heavy work wise for the past few years. And honestly, so many of my dreams are now personal and less professional.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t want world peace?<\/h3>\n

No, I do want world peace!<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Well, it sounded like you didn\u2019t want world peace for a second.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s less thinking about the next 10 years and what needs to happen and just sort of relaxing into what will be instead of trying to control the outcome.<\/p>\n

You are very good about that, I\u2019m telling you.<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m getting better at it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Would you be a mother? She\u2019s going to be the best mom; she\u2019s so nurturing.<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s how you are! I think your maternal instinct is very strong and always has been.<\/p>\n

<\/div>

Thank you, honey.<\/h3>\n

My perspective about kids has changed as I\u2019ve gotten older. I never babysat or anything. As a teenager, I was like, I\u2019m never getting married, I\u2019m never having kids. And then I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids.<\/p>\n

When I was a teenager, every boyfriend I had I was like, I guess this is the one! I was that girl. [Laughs] Wouldn\u2019t it be great if we could have a baby?<\/h3>\n

Aw, a whole village.<\/p>\n

Science.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s the turning-30 thing where you\u2019re like, I\u2019m not that young. I\u2019m young, but I\u2019m not that young.<\/p>\n

I can tell you\u2019re fertile just by looking at you.<\/h3>\n

I can see it in your f—ing face.<\/h3>\n
