That romantic look at life. I think things are tough sometimes and we need that escape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Lopez has starred in rom-coms such as\u00a0<em>Maid in Manhattan<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Wedding Planner<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Monster-in-Law<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Shall We Dance?<\/em>, but hasn&#8217;t appeared in a traditional iteration of the genre since\u00a0<em>The Back-up Plan<\/em>\u00a0in 2010.\u00a0<em>Second Act<\/em>\u00a0follows a 40-something retail worker (Lopez) who reinvents her life when a friend makes her a fake resume that lands her a job at a prestigious Madison Avenue firm.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Lopez said that she personally requested that her co-star on\u00a0<em>Second Act<\/em>\u00a0be Milo Ventigmilia, whose most recent claim to fame is playing Jack Pearson on\u00a0<em>This Is Us<\/em>.\u00a0&#8220;There was only one person I ever saw and it was Milo &#8230; And watching him play a dad I was like, &#8216;Ugh, oh my god,'&#8221; Lopez said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though the volume of romantic comedies has famously been\u00a0on the decline\u00a0in recent years, 2018 seems to be sparking a renaissance: As\u00a0Mia Galuppo wrote\u00a0in\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0in June, &#8220;the genre has found new champions in Netflix and independent financier-distributors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rom-coms have particularly been in demand at Netflix, which launched this year&#8217;s well-reviewed\u00a0<em>Set It Up<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Kissing Booth<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>To All the Boys I&#8217;ve Loved Before<\/em>. Meanwhile, STXfilms is producing\u00a0<em>Second Act<\/em>, while The Fyzz Facility is responsible for\u00a0<em>Destination Wedding<\/em>, out Aug. 24. Warner Bros.&#8217;\u00a0<em>Crazy Rich Asians<\/em>, released this weekend, is a rare big-studio rom-com to be entering theaters.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Also during her\u00a0<em>Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0appearance, Lopez addressed how it felt to learn that she would be receiving MTV&#8217;s Video Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards on Monday. \u201cI got so emotional, it was embarrassing almost,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It\u2019s been surreal.
