Michael Moore\u00a0has made the startling claim that\u00a0Gwen Stefani\u00a0was the reason\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0ran for the presidency.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Fahrenheit 11\/9<\/em>\u00a0alleged in an interview with\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0on Wednesday that Trump, 72, decided to announce his candidacy for president after he learned Stefani, 48, made more money as a coach on NBC\u2019s\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0than he did when he starred on\u00a0The Apprentice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Moore, 64, claimed Trump organized\u00a0his infamous Trump Tower campaign announcementas a way to show NBC he was more popular. NBC began airing\u00a0The Apprentice<\/em>\u00a0in 2004.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019d been talking about running for president since 1998, but he didn\u2019t really want to be president,\u201d Moore told\u00a0THR<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s no penthouse in the White House. And he doesn\u2019t want to live in a black city. He was trying to pit NBC against another network, but it just went off the rails.\u201d<\/p>\n

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Despite Trump\u2019s attempt to one-up the network, NBC cut ties with the business mogul following his comments about Mexican nationals.<\/p>\n

A rep for Stefani did not immediately respond to PEOPLE\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

The filmmaker\u2019s claims come on the same day an anonymous author claiming to be a senior Trump administration official asserted that there\u2019s\u00a0a resistance movement against Trump\u00a0from within his own White House.<\/p>\n

In the essay, titled \u201cI Am Part of the\u00a0Resistance Inside the Trump Administration,\u201d the author claims that many senior White House officials are secretly working to \u201cthwart\u201d the president\u2019s \u201cmisguided impulses\u201d and \u201cworst inclinations\u201d until he is out of office.<\/p>\n

The author blasted Trump\u2019s \u201camorality\u201d and \u201canti-democratic\u201d impulses, and accused the president of attacking conservative ideals including \u201cfree minds, free markets and free people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMeetings with him veer off topic and off the rails, he engages in repetitive rants, and his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back,\u201d the author wrote.<\/p>\n

The president addressed the op-ed at an event in the East Room on Wednesday, saying,\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s part of the resistance within the Trump administration. This is what we have to deal with. And, you know, the dishonest media \u2014 because you people deal with it as well as I do \u2014 but it\u2019s really a disgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you tell me about some anonymous source within the administration, probably who\u2019s failing and probably here for all the wrong reasons \u2014 no,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cAnd\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0is failing. If I weren\u2019t here, I believe\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0probably wouldn\u2019t even exist. And someday when I\u2019m not president, which hopefully will be in about six and a half years from now,\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and CNN and all these phony media outlets will be out of business, folks. They\u2019ll be out of business because there will be nothing to write and nothing of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a note attached to the op-ed, the\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0said that it knew the author\u2019s identity but agreed to publish the essay anonymously so as not to\u00a0jeopardize the official\u2019s job.<\/p>\n
