It\u2019s the role of a lifetime \u2013 but it almost ended years ago.\u00a0Ellen Pompeo<\/strong>\u00a0has been very vocal about the pay disparity on\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>\u00a0and now she\u2019s opening up about the environment. In\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Actors on Actors<\/em>\u00a0series, the 49-year-old gets real with\u00a0Taraji P. Henson<\/strong>, who asks if she\u2019s ever thought of walking away from the hit ABC series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were many moments. It\u2019s funny: I never wanted off the bus in the year that I could get off. The first 10 years we had serious culture issues, very bad behavior, really toxic work environment,\u201d Pompeo, who has been part of\u00a0Grey\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0since its debut in 2005, stated. \u201cBut once I started having kids, it became no longer about me. I need to provide for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pompeo shares daughters Sienna, 9, Stella, 4, and sun Eli, 2, with husband\u00a0Chris Ivery<\/strong>. Now, her children are her main priority and all else comes second.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt 40 years old, where am I ever going to get this kind of money? I need to take care of my kids. But after Season 10, we had some big shifts in front of the camera, behind the camera,\u201d she said. \u201cIt became my goal to have an experience there that I could be happy and proud about, because we had so much turmoil for 10 years. My mission became, this can\u2019t be fantastic to the public and a disaster behind the scenes.\u00a0Shonda Rhimes<\/strong>\u00a0and I decided to\u00a0rewrite the ending of this story.\u00a0That\u2019s what\u2019s kept me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In season 11,\u00a0Patrick Dempsey<\/strong>\u00a0exited the show and \u201cthe studio and network believed the show could not go on without the male lead.\u201d With that,\u00a0Pompeo wanted to prove\u00a0that it could \u2013 something she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was being paid almost double what I was in the beginning. He had a television quote. I had never done TV,\u201d she shared, adding that the writers would say, \u201cHe\u2019s done 13 pilots,\u201d if she asked. \u201cWell, none of them have gone. I didn\u2019t even realize until\u00a0we were renegotiating season 3. No one was offering that up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pompeo, whose contract on\u00a0Grey\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0currently goes through season 17,\u00a0also said that she hasn\u2019t been \u201ccreatively challenged at all\u201d on the show. \u201cEvery once in a while we do an amazing storyline. But for the last five years, I\u2019ve had other milestones that we were trying to achieve behind the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>\u00a0season 16 will debut on ABC in fall 2019.<\/p>\n
