\u201cAt 16 years old, it was \u2018Congratulations, you have the part. I\u2019m not saying you need to lose weight. I\u2019m just saying don\u2019t gain weight.\u2019 Which of course means you need to lose weight,\u201d Hathaway, 36, recalled in Allure magazine\u2019s September issue. She also shared the story with TODAY in 2018.<\/p>\n

But Hathaway is cautiously hopeful that things are changing. While shooting her upcoming Netflix original film \u201cThe Last Thing He Wanted,\u201d the costume designer came to Hathaway with a very different question.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have Ane Crabtree asking me what my body does on my moon \u2014 which I realized meant my period \u2014 so she can make adjustments for me,\u201d Hathaway said. \u201cIt was just this beautiful thing. I am cautious in my praise of how Hollywood is shifting. There is so much more body inclusivity \u2014 which is great! \u2014 but the thin thing is definitely still the centralized \u2018normal\u2019 expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hathaway announced on Instagram in 2018 that she would be gaining weight \u2014 20 pounds to be exact \u2014 for her role in the political thriller, which costars Ben Affleck. \u201cTo all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it\u2019s not me, it\u2019s you,\u201d she wrote in the caption.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, when Hathaway appeared on TODAY, she explained to Hoda Kotb that people are constantly talking about her body. She noted that some comments are \u201covert\u201d and others are \u201ckind of micro ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hathaway, who is mom to 3-year-old Jonathan, will welcome her second child with husband, Adam Shulman, in the fall. After the baby arrives, she will hopefully remember her own words of wisdom that she shared on Instagram when her son was still an infant.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever). There is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all),\u201d she wrote. \u201cBodies change. Bodies grow. Bodies shrink. It\u2019s all love (don\u2019t let anyone tell you otherwise.)<\/p>\n
