Avril Lavigne<\/strong>\u00a0welcomed an addition to her family tonight onstage at Toronto\u2019s Meridian Hall, when her cousin Bernie proposed to his girlfriend.<\/p>\n

The 75-minute set was special anyway \u2014 her return to perform in Canada after a five-year absence, during which she had to gain back her health after contracting the debilitating Lyme Disease.\u00a0Toronto also holds a special place for the Napanee-raised pop singer;\u00a0she bought her first house in the city as a teenager when her debut album,\u00a0Let Go,<\/em>\u00a0took off in 2002.<\/p>\n

Clearly elated by the fan response and performing again, the 35-year-old, who is touring behind her new album,\u00a0Head Above Water<\/em>, revealed she had family and friends in the house, and began talking about her dad\u2019s identical twin brother, who has one son who looks like her brother and a daughter who looks like her, she said.\u00a0She has posted photos of\u00a0the four of them\u00a0on her social media\u00a0in the past.<\/p>\n

She then introduced her cousin Bernie Lavigne, who had a young woman with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell I am actually up here for a reason,\u201d he said, dipping into his pocket, then getting down on one knee. While most of us couldn\u2019t hear the proposal, we saw her nod and embrace, while Avril clapped.\u00a0Bernie slipped the ring on his fiancee’s finger. \u201cShe said yes,\u201d exclaimed Avril, raising her arm in the air. \u201cWelcome to the family,\u201d she said, giving her a hug.<\/p>\n

Also during the show, Michael Clifford, lead guitarist from Aussie pop-punk outfit\u00a05 Seconds of Summer<\/strong>, came out and played on “Sk8er Boi.”<\/p>\n
