Julianne Moore doesn’t want to be thought of as a woman “of a certain age.”<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old Oscar winner is on the cover of the new\u00a0ES Magazine<\/em>, out Thursday, and in the interview she discusses everything from the #MeToo movement to aging as a woman in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

Moore sees a lot of positive developments coming from the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, which have been ongoing in Hollywood since late 2017.<\/p>\n

“[They have been] the biggest seismic change that we have ever had, just because it made people realize how much disparity there was in our business, I don\u2019t know if there\u2019s really been a shift,” she says. “There\u2019s been a door that\u2019s opened but things don\u2019t change unless you make the effort. If you\u2019re somebody who thinks,\u00a0I\u2019m going to go out of my way to hire 50 per cent women<\/em>, then it\u2019ll happen, but it doesn\u2019t just happen accidentally. I\u2019m only at this point just beginning to create my own material.”<\/p>\n

That said, there are still some lingering annoyances Moore bears with how women are treated, particularly when it comes to getting older.<\/p>\n

“This is one of my pet peeves. It\u2019s as if you are saying that her age is so terrible that you don\u2019t want to mention it. You wouldn\u2019t say ‘a man of a certain age,'” she explains. “Obfuscating your age or skirting around it, or trying to be delicate about it, that\u2019s what makes me crazy. It\u2019s not so horrible to be in your 50s \u2014 it\u2019s not horrible at all. It\u2019s simply part of life.”<\/p>\n

The “After the Wedding” star also talks about being married to Bart Freundlich for over 16 years and balancing the relationship with work in the film industry.<\/p>\n

“I haven\u2019t found it difficult,” she says. “I think for anybody in any industry who travels a lot, there\u2019s a danger \u2014 if you don\u2019t spend time together, you\u2019re going to be in trouble. Because we always had children we stayed together a lot as a family. But if you go away for a year to make a movie, your relationship\u2019s not going to survive.”<\/p>\n
