<\/p>\nShakira has opened up about the trauma of losing her voice.<\/p>\n

The Colombian singer \u2014 who suffered a hemorrhage of her right vocal cord in 2017 \u2014 said the experience of not being able to sing was \u201cunbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was my identity,\u201d she told The Guardian. \u201cThere were times I couldn\u2019t even get out of bed \u2013 I was so depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
This, in turn, had a major impact on her family life with Barcelona soccer star Gerard Piqu\u00e9 and sons Milan, 6, and Sasha, 4 \u2014 not least because at times the \u201cHips Don\u2019t Lie\u201d singer was only able to communicate through sign language. She also had to postpone her El Dorado World Tour because of the injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not positive. I was so pessimistic. I was a bitter person to be around,\u201d she said. \u201cGerard saw the worst of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Away from the limelight \u2014 and ignoring doctor\u2019s advice to have surgery \u2014 Shakira tried hypnosis, meditation, and even some holy water from the French city of Lourdes to try and correct the damage to her singing voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cEither I needed surgery or divine intervention,\u201d she told the paper.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, the three-time Grammy winner was proven right and naturally rediscovered her singing voice, returning to the stage in June 2018 \u2014 something she said was like \u201chaving some kind of religious experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every night of her subsequent El Dorado tour \u2014 which has now been turned into a movie \u2014 was \u201ca gift,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

In February, the Colombian will spread a huge scoop of icing onto the top of this cake by performing with Jennifer Lopez on the biggest stage of all: the Super Bowl Halftime Show.<\/p>\n
Lopez recently told Extra that she and Shakira are already deep in the planning stages of their half-time, which takes place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, on Feb. 2, 2020 \u2014 which also happens to be Shakira\u2019s 43rd birthday.<\/p>\n
\u201cShakira and I have spoken a few times already,\u201d Lopez, 50, said. \u201cShe\u2019s putting her thing together, [I\u2019m] putting my thing together, thinking about who we want to join us onstage if we want that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite being from Colombia, the significance of playing the halftime show isn\u2019t lost on Shakira, either. While many performers have refused to play the gig in response to the NFL\u2019s treatment of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick \u2014 who famously took a knee during the 2016 national anthem \u2014 Shakira believes the Latin-themed show will highlight another cause that\u2019s close to her heart.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s the right thing to do for the Latino community because we\u2019ve also been through so much in Trump\u2019s America, with walls being built,\u201d she told The Guardian.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to celebrate our culture, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
