Although he\u2019s often referred to as one of the best actors of his generation, Christian Bale\u2019s acting abilities didn\u2019t make the best first impression on his in-laws.<\/p>\n

Speaking to PEOPLE recently with his Ford v Ferrari costar Matt Damon about their family\u2019s favorite films of theirs, Bale revealed that one of his in-laws\u2019 very first experiences with his movies was watching one of his most complicated, violent and semi-naked performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first got married [to wife Sibi], her grandma said, \u2018So he\u2019s an actor?\u2019 \u2018Yeah,\u2019 she says. \u2018Has he done anything? \u2018Yeah, he did a film, it\u2019s called American Psycho,\u2019 \u201d he recalled. \u201cSo Sibi\u2019s mom took her a copy of American Psycho.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, no,\u201d Damon said with a look of horror on his face. \u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSibi\u2019s mom hadn\u2019t realized quite how many inappropriate moments there might be,\u201d Bale remembered with a smile. \u201cAnd so the first inappropriate moment started and she just pressed fast-forward. Sibi\u2019s grandma didn\u2019t realize that that was not part of the film. She just thought it was some stylistic thing that went by in very quick moments. And then [Sibi\u2019s mom] realized that almost the entire film is inappropriate. They got through it in 15 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 2000 thriller, Bale plays the intense, high strung, and mentally unhinged character Patrick Bateman. It wasn\u2019t a box office success at the time of its release, but has a cult following and earned Bale acclaim for his terrifying performance.<\/p>\n

Bale continued: \u201cThey finish the film, to which she looked [at her daughter] and she went, \u2018Well, he\u2019s not a proper actor, is he? That was about 15 minutes long that film. Well, anyway, fingers crossed he\u2019ll start doing better in the future.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s probably many people would agree with her assessment on that,\u201d he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Bale\u2019s latest film, Ford v Ferrari, opposite Damon, is much more family-friendly and revolves around the story of how the Ford Motor Company took on rival Ferrari at the 24 hour Les Mans race in 1959.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so bloody proud to be a part of this, there are not many movies like this any longer,\u201d Bale said of the film, in which he plays legendary driver Ken Miles. \u201cIt\u2019s the closest you will ever get to being in a race car without being in a race car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely better in a movie theater than on your phone,\u201d quipped Damon.<\/p>\n

Ford v Ferrari is now playing in theaters.<\/p>\n
