Less than 12 hours after news broke that Deborah Dugan had been placed on administrative leave from her post as president\/CEO of the Recording Academy, her attorney fired back with a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has been reported is not nearly the story that needs to be told. When our ability to speak is not restrained by a 28-page contract and legal threats, we will expose what happens when you \u2018step up\u2019 at the\u00a0Recording Academy, a public nonprofit,\u201d wrote her attorney Bryan Freedman.<\/p>\n

In the wake of\u00a0Dugan\u2019s sudden removal from her post as president\/CEO of the Recording Academy\u00a0on Thursday \u2014 a mere five months after she\u2019d taken charge, and just ten days before the\u00a0Grammy Awards\u00a0\u2014 even insiders were stunned by the abruptness of the move and perplexed by the purported reasons for it.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0sources close to the situation tell\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0that what may have taken place was a \u201ccoup\u201d: a move by entrenched Academy veterans to discredit and remove Dugan, who came in promising significant changes to the organization, before she could establish herself with a successful first show.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0official Academy statement\u00a0reads in part, \u201cIn light of concerns raised to the\u00a0Recording Academy\u00a0Board of Trustees, including a formal allegation of misconduct by a senior female member of the\u00a0Recording Academy\u00a0team, the Board has placed [Dugan] on administrative leave, effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freedman\u2019s statement references former Grammy chief Neil Portnow\u2019s controversial 2018 comment that female artists and executives need to \u201cstep up\u201d in order to advance in the music industry. Portnow announced he was stepping down three months after making the comment.<\/p>\n
