But now she\u2019s ready to step into the light and start producing music, which she\u2019s always wanted to do. Grace\u2019s manager Jack (Ice Cube) is quick to squash her dreams but meeting David Cliff (Kevin Harrison Jr.) renews her hopes. Grace too starts looking at new career directions.<\/p>\n<p>Those who enjoyed \u2018Late Night\u2019 with Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling should expect something similar in tone in \u2018The High Note\u2019, as Nisha Ganatra directed both. While its predecessor looked into late night TV, in \u2018The High Note\u2019 you have another insight into a male-dominated industry where middle-aged women struggle to have their voice heard \u2013 even when they\u2019ve proven themselves, as Grace Davis has, being an 11-time Grammy winner.<\/p>\n<p>In the role of Grace, \u2018Black-ish\u2019 star Tracee Ellis Ross is just fabulous. Her voice is gorgeous (of course such is to be expected of Diana Ross\u2019s daughter) but even more impressive is her attitude which exudes confidence and stardom. Slightly less convincing and less charming is Dakota Johnson as Maggie \u2013 sure she knows original song writers and songs with California in the title, but as with her role in \u2018Bad Times at the El Royale\u2019, you struggle to buy it. She doesn\u2019t quite make the role her own and you could easily imagine an actress like Hailee Stanfield or Chloe Grace Moretz stepping in instead, so that\u2019s not great given her character takes up the most screen time.<\/p>\n<p>Ice Cube brings the comedy he\u2019s become renowned for, as well as a great aura of authority as a manager. He gives a great speech about the trials of music producing and it is fun to see art imitate life, given his music background. Kelvin Harrison Jr. is very likeable too, he\u2019s been coming up and up in the last three years between the likes of \u2018It Comes at Night\u2019, \u2018Luce\u2019 and \u2018Waves\u2019. Zoe Chao as roommate and supportive best friend Katie makes for another amiable character.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The High Note\u2019 will remind viewers of \u2018The Devil Wears Prada\u2019 as we observe Maggie running around, collecting juices, picking up dry cleaning, purchasing pi\u00f1atas for a party and more for Grace. \u2018Pitch Perfect\u2019 also comes to mind as Maggie\u2019s characterisation recalls Anna Kendrick\u2019s role. But there\u2019s little remarkable about the movie in its own right. Generally, it\u2019s quite formulaic. But it is also fun, sweet and easy-to-watch. It\u2019s capped off with a feel-good ending too with a very catchy number in \u2018Love Myself\u2019, sung by Ross, so it\u2019ll leave you with a smile even if it isn\u2019t revelatory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The High Note&#8217;
