Halle Berry\u00a0has announced<\/a>\u00a0that she will no longer be preparing to play the role of a transgender man in an upcoming film project after a swift backlash to her discussion of the project.<\/p>\n

Though little was known about the part or the film \u2014 and Berry hadn\u2019t even been officially cast \u2014 the actress drew criticism for repeatedly referring to the male character as a woman during an Instagram Live interview on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman is a trans character, so she\u2019s a woman that transitioned into a man. She\u2019s a character in a project I love that I might be doing,\u201d\u00a0Berry said<\/a>. \u201cWho this woman was is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next project.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Berry misgendering the character, the news of her role also reopened an ongoing discussion about the problems inherent in actors\u2019 portrayals of trans characters of the opposite gender, and trans actors\u2019 general exclusion from mainstream film.<\/p>\n

Berry\u00a0issued an apology for her words on Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,\u201d she posted on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake.
