But what if you&#8217;re not able to be in the sun? How do you know if you&#8217;re experiencing a vitamin D deficiency?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Vitamin D not only helps with your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/best-ways-to-speed-up-your-metabolism\/\">metabolism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/vitamin-b12-deficiency-coronavirus\/\">immunity<\/a>, but also with your overall mood and body function. However, because signs of a vitamin D deficiency can be subtle, it can be hard to determine if you&#8217;re experiencing a lack of it. In order to determine the different signs of a vitamin D deficiency, we spoke with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drnicoleavena.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicole Avena<\/a>, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Visiting Professor of Health Psychology at Princeton University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8220;Vitamin D is produced by skin cells when they are exposed to light, this makes it unique among other vitamins which usually need to be ingested,&#8221; says Avena. &#8220;While the sun is typically the best source for vitamin D, it isn&#8217;t always easy to be in the sun due to UV exposures and also due to limited daylight in certain parts of the world, like in the northern climates.<strong>\u00a0The body&#8217;s ability to produce and absorb vitamin D decreases significantly in older people compared to younger ones.<\/strong>\u00a0Especially for older people with restricted mobility or health conditions that require them to remain inside, it is nearly impossible for them to get sufficient vitamin D from the sun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Here are a few of the signs that you&#8217;ll need to step into the sun\u2014or eat more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/5-best-foods-for-vitamin-d\/\">foods rich in vitamin D<\/a>. This means that when there&#8217;s a vitamin D deficiency, there can be issues with overall bone health\u2014and can result in bone or even joint pain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8220;In severe cases of vitamin D deficiency, the bones become demineralized and soft,&#8221; says Avena. &#8220;In children, this presents itself as rickets. In adults, this can become osteomalacia. There is still research going on to see if vitamin D deficiency is involved in diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune disorders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"number-head-mod number-head-mod-standalone\">\n<div class=\"header-mod\">\n<div class=\"title-number\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"title\" style=\"text-align: left\">You&#8217;ll feel weak.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"431786\" class=\"alignnone\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-431786 jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.eatthis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tired-woman-exercising.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tired woman exercising in pink shirt\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Yes, physically weak. One study by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1304730\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Western Journal of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0that muscle weakness is certainly a sign that someone isn&#8217;t getting enough vitamin D\u2014but it can also be reversible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"square-fixed-2\" class=\"karma_unit inline hide-mobile\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-lazy-square-fixed-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"number-head-mod number-head-mod-standalone\">\n<div class=\"header-mod\">\n<div class=\"title-number\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"title\" style=\"text-align: left\">You&#8217;ll feel tired and lethargic.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"491969\" class=\"alignnone\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-491969 jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.eatthis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/tired.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"tired woman\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Avena points out feeling tired and even lethargic can be a sign of a vitamin D deficiency. One study published by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4158648\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North American Journal of Medical Sciences<\/a>\u00a0took a closer look at this claim and did find that 77.2% of patients with low vitamin D deficiency were presented with fatigue. When their vitamin D numbers were normalized, their symptoms of fatigue were significantly improved..<\/p>\n<div class=\"number-head-mod number-head-mod-standalone\">\n<div class=\"header-mod\">\n<div class=\"title-number\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"title\" style=\"text-align: left\">You&#8217;re feeling moody.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"493440\" class=\"alignnone\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-493440 jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.eatthis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/anxiety-depression.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"anxiety depression\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Studies do show there is an interesting tie between vitamin D deficiency and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/foods-make-anxiety-worse\/\">depression<\/a>. One study published by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2908269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Issues in Mental Health Nursing<\/a>\u00a0concludes groups that are at risk for vitamin D deficiency (the elderly, adolescents, obese individuals, and those with chronic illness) are also the same groups that reported risks for depression. A similar study was also published by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/vitamin-d-deficiency-and-depression-in-adults-systematic-review-and-metaanalysis\/F4E7DFBE5A7B99C9E6430AF472286860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Journal of Psychiatry<\/a>. If you are feeling moody and don&#8217;t have an explanation for it, evaluating your vitamin D intake might be a helpful next step.
