Sean Connery’s<\/a>\u00a0wife is opening up about her late husband’s difficult final years.\u00a0Micheline Roquebrune opened up for a rare interview and revealed that\u00a0the James Bond actor<\/a>\u00a0struggled with dementia in the time leading up to his death.<\/p>\n

The 90-year-old Scottish actor — whose death\u00a0was announced on Sthat\u00a0<\/a>the James Bond actor<\/a>\u00a0struggled with dementia in the time leading up to his death.aturday\u00a0<\/a>— was a screen legend and celebrated star before he retired from acting in 2006. Roquebrune\u00a0spoke with\u00a0Mail on Sunday<\/em><\/a>\u00a0following her husband’s death, and reflected on his mental health battles.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

“He had dementia and it took its toll on him,” the 91-year-old French-Moroccan\u00a0actress\u00a0said. “He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss.”<\/p>\n

Roquebrune — Connery’s second wife to whom he’d been married for 45 years —\u00a0said of his dementia battle, “It was no life for him.”<\/p>\n

“He was not able to express himself latterly. At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful,” she shared. “I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted.”<\/p>\n

Roquebrune reflected on her life with her husband, telling the outlet, “He was gorgeous and we had a wonderful life together. He was a model of a man.”<\/p>\n

“It is going to be very hard without him, I know that. But it could not last for ever and he went peacefully,” she added.<\/p>\n

Connery’s family\u00a0confirmed the news of his death<\/a>\u00a0to ET on Saturday. Connery’s son Jason — from his first marriage — told the\u00a0BBC<\/a>\u00a0that his father had been “unwell for some time.”<\/p>\n

“We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time,” he said. “A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”<\/p>\n

The Scottish icon’s acting career spanned five decades, including an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in 1988 for\u00a0The Untouchables<\/em>. However, he was best known for his portrayal of James Bond — after being the first actor to bring the role to the big screen in 1962’s\u00a0Dr. No<\/em>, he appeared in a total of seven of the spy thrillers.<\/p>\n

Connery’s other memorable film roles include\u00a0The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Rock<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Throughout he career he was also awarded with two BAFTA Awards (one being a BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award), and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. After retiring from acting, he remained out of the spotlight.<\/p>\n
