A ruling in Johnny Depp\u2019s sensational libel case will be announced early Monday in London.<\/p>\n

High-court Justice Andrew Nicol has said he will\u00a0file his judgment at 10 a.m.<\/a>\u00a0London time \u2014 or 5 a.m. in New York \u2014 after spending more than three months deliberating over the\u00a0sordid and salacious testimony<\/a>\u00a0from Depp, actress ex Amber Heard and a host of their pals and others during a three-week trial in July.<\/p>\n

Depp, the 57-year-old star of such flicks as \u201cPirates of the Caribbean,\u201d is suing the publisher of Britain\u2019s The Sun newspaper and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over an April 2018 headline that called him a \u201cwife beater.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp took the stand at trial to vehemently deny ever beating then-wife Heard \u2014 instead claiming the \u201cAquaman\u201d actress was the violent one and painting her as a compulsive liar who even\u00a0faked photos of black eyes<\/a>\u00a0as part of a \u201cchoreographed hoax\u201d to destroy him.<\/p>\n

He told the court at one point that the actress \u201ccame into my life to take from me anything worth taking and then destroy what remained of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sun\u2019s side fired back with graphic testimony from Heard, 34, who detailed scores of times how the \u201cmonster\u201d allegedly came out in Depp and he battered and\u00a0threatened to kill her<\/a>\u00a0during their toxic five-year relationship.<\/p>\n

She also painted him as a\u00a0\u201chopeless\u201d addict<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 with his regular days-long\u00a0binges on drink and drugs<\/a>\u00a0leaving him too trashed to recall the true depths of his domestic violence.<\/p>\n

Depp lost a fingertip during what Heard called a \u201cthree-day ordeal of assaults\u201d in a rented house in Australia \u2014 ending with the actor allegedly\u00a0writing her name in pee<\/a>\u00a0on the floor and scrawling angry messages on mirrors using the\u00a0bloody stump of his digit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That was sparked in part by jealousy over his wife\u2019s co-star Billy Bob Thornton \u2014 one of a\u00a0series of A-listers<\/a>\u00a0she was accused of sleeping with, including actors Leonardo DiCaprio and James Franco and Tesla mogul Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

Just when it seemed impossible for the testimony to get any more sordid, the court heard that Depp finally dumped Heard after she or a pal\u00a0defecated in his bed<\/a>\u00a0out of vengeance \u2014 with\u00a0photos of the offending feces<\/a>\u00a0included as evidence.<\/p>\n

Despite being dubbed the biggest English libel case of the 21st century, Depp is likely to be awarded only a modest sum if the decision goes his way, with his lawyer, David Sherborne, having told the court that it was \u201cnot a case about money\u201d but \u201cvindication.\u201d<\/p>\n

No matter the outcome, legal experts predict the losing side will appeal \u2014 and most of the evidence will soon get rehashed in a $50 million defamation lawsuit Depp has filed against his ex in the US.<\/p>\n

Either way, both Depp and Heard \u201care going to lose,\u201d said Mark Stephens, a media lawyer at the law firm Howard Kennedy, to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reputations of both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are tarnished irrevocably,\u201d Stephens said. And \u201cI think that it\u2019s going to persist, because whoever wins in this case, the way in which this case was presented, the issues that came up, particularly around gendered presentation of the case, I think that\u2019s going to be studied for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whichever side wins, the verdict can be appealed all the way to the UK Supreme Court, experts said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Depp is suing Heard for $50 million in Virginia over a Washington Post op-ed she penned about her experience as a victim of domestic violence. While he wasn\u2019t named in the piece, he insists it was strongly inferred he was the perpetrator.<\/p>\n

Stephens has told The Post that the British case could be a harbinger of things to come for the Virginia court fight.<\/p>\n

If Depp loses in London, \u201che\u2019s almost certain to lose that American case\u201d next year, Stephens told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this is in some ways a dress rehearsal for the second case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp and Heard met on the set of 2011 comedy \u201cThe Rum Diary\u201d and married in Los Angeles in 2015.<\/p>\n

They separated the following year and divorced in 2017 after Heard already made accusations of domestic violence.<\/p>\n
