Meghan Markle<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is using her voice in one of the most important ways.<\/p>\n

E! News can confirm the Duchess of Sussex voted in the\u00a02020 Presidential Election<\/a>. She becomes the first modern royal to vote in\u00a0a U.S. presidential election.<\/p>\n

Meghan\u00a0and\u00a0Prince Harry<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0currently reside in the beachside town of Santa Barbara, Calif., but it’s unclear if she participated in the voting process through mail or at a polling place.<\/p>\n

Since her return to California, Meghan has frequently\u00a0discussed the importance of voting<\/a>\u00a0and even\u00a0took part\u00a0in\u00a0calling potential voters<\/a>\u00a0ahead of Nov. 3, so it’s always been expected that she would cast her ballot in this year’s election.<\/p>\n

In September, activist\u00a0Gloria Steinem<\/strong>\u00a0spoke about\u00a0Meghan’s\u00a0surprising\u00a0volunteer work,\u00a0sharing<\/a>, “She came home to vote\u00a0and the first thing we did, and why\u00a0she came to see me<\/a>… was we sat at the dining room table here, where I am right now, and cold-called voters. And said, ‘Hello, I’m Meg,’ and, ‘Hello, I’m Gloria,’ and, ‘Are you going to vote?’ And that was her initiative.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

And in a previous conversation with Gloria,\u00a0Meghan discussed\u00a0former Vice President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>announcement that Senator\u00a0<\/a>Kamala Harris<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0would be his vice president. “I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,” she shared. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The Duchess’ activism\u00a0likely wouldn’t have been possible if she and Harry didn’t step down from their positions as senior members of the royal family this March. For decades now, the royal family has remained politically neutral since doing otherwise would be considered unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0in their new roles, the couple\u00a0can\u00a0speak more freely about\u00a0important issues, including this year’s election. In fact, she and Harry stirred controversy with their\u00a0call for\u00a0an end to misinformation<\/a>\u00a0in a speech for\u00a0TIME100<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In September, Harry told viewers, “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity. What we consume, what we are exposed to, and what we engage with online, has a real effect on all of us.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

However, Meghan said she\u00a0doesn’t take the criticism personally<\/a>. “If you look back at anything that I’ve said, it’s really interesting because what ends up being inflammatory it seems is people’s interpretation of it,” she reflected in a discussion for\u00a0Fortune<\/em>\u00a0magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit. “But if you listen to what I actually say, it’s not controversial.”<\/p>\n

So how does she do it?\u00a0“The moment that you’re able to be liberated from all these other opinions of what you know to be true, then I think it’s very easy to live with truth and live with authenticity,”\u00a0Archie Harrison<\/strong>‘s mom\u00a0explained. “That’s how I choose to move through the world.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
