It smashed an Emmys record by earning 32 nominations for its final run,\u00a0the\u00a0most\u00a0ever for a single season. At the 2019 Emmys,\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>\u00a0took home the prize for Outstanding Drama Series<\/a>\u00a0and won\u00a011 more trophies.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0season one actor\u00a0Jason\u00a0Momoa<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0didn’t benefit much from the initial\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>\u00a0boom.<\/p>\n

This week, he\u00a0revealed that his quick stint as Khal Drogo did not grant him the fame and fortune that his co-stars would go on to experience. The HBO fantasy series, hailed as one of the\u00a0best book-to-TV adaptations<\/a>, sky-rocketed the careers of its stars\u00a0Sophie Turner<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Maisie Williams<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Emilia Clarke<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Kit Harington<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yet Momoa\u00a0told\u00a0InStyle<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>on Tuesday, Nov. 10,\u00a0“I mean, we were starving after\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>,” adding, “I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Fans will recall that his character was killed off after marrying\u00a0Daenerys (Clarke) in 2011. After\u00a0the end of his reign on\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>, Momoa struggled to meet payments on\u00a0his house in Topanga Canyon, near\u00a0Los Angeles, where he\u00a0lived with his wife<\/a>\u00a0Lisa Bonet<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and their two kids\u2014Lola<\/a><\/strong>, 13, and\u00a0Nakoa-Wolf<\/a><\/strong>, 11.<\/p>\n

His financial situation only improved about five years later, once he\u00a0was cast as Aquaman in a string of films based on DC Comics. He took on that role in 2016’s\u00a0Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/em>, 2017’s\u00a0Justice League<\/em>\u00a0and 2018’s\u00a0Aquaman<\/em>,\u00a0with actress\u00a0Amber Heard<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Though he no longer struggles the same way financially, Momoa is still\u00a0learning\u00a0how to be a good dad. He said that since he grew up without a father at home,\u00a0“I didn’t know what it takes to be a dad.” He added, “And I don’t want to just tell my son, \u2018Because I said so.’ I really want to connect, and I want him to be vulnerable and open.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

He is open to embracing both his masculine and feminine sides and wants to continue to grow as a person. The 41-year-old dad said, “I’m also the first one to say, ‘I have a lot of problems, and I want to be able to correct those problems.'”<\/p>\n

Momoa further explained that after his hardships in Hollywood, he doesn’t take for granted his newfound success, saying,\u00a0“I feel like I’m still a kid, freaking out.” He’ll next appear in\u00a0Dune<\/em>\u00a0alongside\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Zendaya<\/a><\/strong>, though the film’s release date has been pushed back to October 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
