Selena Gomez<\/a>\u00a0is taking on a groundbreaking role in her latest project.<\/p>\n

The singer and actress, 28, will portray gay Peruvian mountaineer Silvia V\u00e1squez-Lavado in the upcoming biopic\u00a0In the Shadow of the Mountain<\/em>, according to\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The film is based on the upcoming memoir of the same name by V\u00e1squez-Lavado, who became the first openly gay woman to climb the highest mountain on each continent, a challenge called the Seven Summits, in June 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The memoir is expected to be published in winter 2022, while the film does not yet have a release date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Gomez will produce the film through her July Moon Productions along with Scott Budnick’s One Community and Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti’s Tempesta Films. V\u00e1squez-Lavado, 46, and Lara Love Hardin of Idea Architects are also executive producing,\u00a0THR\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Elgin James, the writer-director of\u00a0Little Birds<\/em>\u00a0and co-creator of FX\u2019s Mayan\u2019s M.C.<\/em>, will reportedly write and direct the film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Along with also being the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest, V\u00e1squez-Lavado is the founder of\u00a0Courageous Girls<\/a>, a nonprofit that helps survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking. She has organized excursions for abuse survivors to the Mount Everest base.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
