Selena Gomez<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0fans are upset\u00a0over the\u00a0new\u00a0Saved By the Bell\u00a0<\/em>reboot<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0NBCU’s Peacock streaming service<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The “Souvenir” singer’s followers defended her on Twitter on Saturday, Nov. 28 after the television show\u00a0included several scenes\u00a0that referenced her real-life\u00a02017 kidney transplant<\/a>. The sixth episode, titled “Teen-Line,” included\u00a0two instances when Selena’s surgery was brought up at Bayside High.<\/p>\n

In one scene, two students, who are not main cast members, argue\u00a0over who\u00a0Selena’s\u00a0transplant donor was<\/a>.\u00a0“I know for a fact that Selena Gomez’s kidney donor was\u00a0Justin Bieber<\/a><\/strong>‘s mom,” one character stated, according to a Twitter user\u00a0who shared footage of the episode<\/a>. “God I wish that I had my phone so I could prove it.”<\/p>\n

“Prove what? That you’re an idiot,” the other character replied. “It was\u00a0Demi Lovato<\/a><\/strong>‘s kidney. They’re best friends… like you and I were.”<\/p>\n

Back in 2017, Selena\u00a0revealed\u00a0she received a kidney transplant<\/a>\u00a0from her friend and\u00a0Grown-ish<\/em>\u00a0actress\u00a0Francia Raisa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

In another scene from the same episode,\u00a0one of the school walls had a message\u00a0written in black graffiti\u00a0about the pop star’s surgery. The\u00a0text appeared to read<\/a>, “Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?”<\/p>\n

Although the\u00a0main characters\u00a0Alycia Pascual-Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>\u00a0(Aisha Garcia) and\u00a0Belmont Cameli<\/strong>\u00a0(Jamie Spano) don’t mention Selena’s health during their heart-to-heart,\u00a0the graffiti wall is\u00a0displayed in the background.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

In light of the episode, the star’s fans have expressed their outrage on Twitter. So\u00a0much so that “Respect Selena Gomez” was trending on Saturday.<\/p>\n

One user\u00a0shared<\/a>, “Selena has been through so much in her life, with [sic] kidney transplant, constant battle with lupus, and her struggle with bipolar disorder. It makes me sick how some people think it’s funny to joke about a disease.”<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0person\u00a0wrote<\/a>, “wtf is wrong with this show and it’s [sic] obsession with selenas [sic] health??? this is so disgusting and unnecessary.”<\/p>\n

“The show-runners should’ve known how tone deaf [sic] and insensitive to lupus survivors it was to have ‘does selena gomez even have kidneys’ spray painted [sic] on the wall,” someone else\u00a0added<\/a>. “You’re not edgy you’re disrespectful.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Following the backlash, Peacock, UTV and\u00a0executive producers\u00a0issued an apology in a statement shared with E! News.<\/p>\n

“We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health,” the statement read. “We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.”<\/p>\n

At this time, the 28-year-old star hasn’t issued a statement regarding the series. E! News has reached out to Selena’s reps for comment and we have yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
