David Prowse<\/strong>, who physically played Darth Vader in the original trilogy, has died.\u00a0He was 85. His agent,\u00a0Thomas Bowington<\/strong>, told\u00a0BBC News<\/a>\u00a0that Prowse passed away after a short illness. In 2018,\u00a0CNN<\/a>\u00a0reported that Prowse was being treated for prostate cancer.\u00a0The actor\u00a0is survived by his wife,\u00a0Norma<\/strong>, and their three children.<\/p>\n

Bowington called his death “a truly and deeply heart-wrenching loss for us and millions of fans all over the world.” He also said in his statement to BBC News, “May the force be with him, always! Though famous for playing many monsters – for myself, and all who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives.”<\/p>\n

A former bodybuilder standing 6’7″, Prowse was cast as Darth Vader for his imposing physique and played the masked villain in person. However,\u00a0James Earl Jones<\/strong>\u00a0provided his\u00a0booming voice, as Prowse’s\u00a0English\u00a0accent was\u00a0deemed unsuitable for the part. In the original trilogy’s last film,\u00a0Return of the Jedi<\/em>, the late\u00a0Sebastian Shaw<\/strong>\u00a0physically portrayed Vader when his face was revealed to main character Luke Skywalker, played by\u00a0Mark Hamill<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Hamill, 69, paid tribute to Prowse on Twitter following news of his death,\u00a0writing<\/a>, “So sad to hear David Prowse has passed. He was a kind man & much more than Darth Vader. Actor-Husband-Father-Member of the Order of the British Empire-3 time British Weightlifting Champion & Safety Icon the Green Cross Code Man. He loved his fans as much as they loved him. #RIP”<\/p>\n

Prowse earned an MBE in 2000 for playing the Green Cross Code Man in a U.K. road safety program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Anthony Daniels<\/strong>, who has played C-3PO in 11 of the 12\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0films, also paid tribute to Prowse. The 74-year-old British actor\u00a0tweeted<\/a>,\u00a0“Dave has gone. I don’t think 3PO ever faced Vader’s mighty presence on set, other than as a bag of bits on Chewie’s shoulders in the carbon freezer. But Dave’s iconic figure dominated the finished film in ’77 and has done so ever since. And will continue to do so.”<\/p>\n

Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0creator and original director\u00a0George Lucas<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0said in a statement to the\u00a0Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>, “David brought a physicality to Darth Vader that was essential for the character. He made\u00a0Vader leap off the page and on to the big screen, with an\u00a0imposing stature and movement performance to match the intensity and undercurrent of Vader’s presence.”<\/p>\n

Lucas added, “David was up for anything and contributed to the success of what would become a memorable, tragic figure. May he rest in peace.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

In addition to\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>,\u00a0Prowse also appeared in\u00a0Stanley Kubrick<\/strong>‘s\u00a0A Clockwork Orange<\/em>\u00a0in 1971.\u00a0According to the\u00a0Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, that where Lucas first saw him.<\/p>\n

Prowse had largely kept out of the spotlight in recent years. In 2015,\u00a0he attended the premiere of\u00a0Spanish directors\u00a0Marcos Cabota<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Toni Bestard<\/strong>‘s documentary film about his life,\u00a0I Am Your Father<\/em>, named after Darth Vader’s iconic line to Luke Skywalker,\u00a0in Madrid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The following year, Prowse\u00a0attended the funeral of\u00a0Kenny Baker<\/strong>, who played droid R2-D2, C-3PO’s companion. He died at age 81 in 2016. Also that year, original\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0actress\u00a0Carrie Fisher<\/a><\/strong>, who\u00a0portrayed Princess\u00a0Leia,\u00a0died at age 60<\/a>. Their co-star\u00a0Peter Mayhew<\/strong>, who played Chewbacca,\u00a0died at age 74 in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
