\u201cWe were together since [I was] 16. Our house burned down. We had been, like, engaged \u2014 I don\u2019t know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married \u2014 but when we lost our house in Malibu, which if you listen to my voice pre- and post-fire,\u00a0they\u2019re very different so that trauma really affected my voice<\/a>,\u201d the 27-year-old \u201cBad Karma\u201d singer told\u00a0Howard Stern<\/strong>\u00a0about Hemsworth<\/a>, 30, in a revealing new Interview. \u201cMe being an intense person and not wanting to sit with it and not wanting to go, you know, \u2018What could be purposeful about this?\u2019 I just clung to what I had left of that house, which was me and him.\u201d<\/p>\n

One month after losing their home, Cyrus and Hemsworth wed in December 2018. The pair,\u00a0who dated on and off for nearly a decade<\/a>, filed for divorce in August 2019 after eight months of marriage. She subsequently began a whirlwind romance with\u00a0Kaitlynn Carter.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0After her split from the\u00a0Hills<\/em>\u00a0star, she started seeing longtime friend\u00a0Cody Simpson<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>before her divorce paperwork was\u00a0even finalized in January.<\/a>\u00a0Cyrus and Simpson called it quits earlier this year.<\/p>\n

During an interview with\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>\u00a0f<\/em>or her January 2021 cover story, Cyrus expanded on why the\u00a0fire pushed her to marry Hemsworth:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cAs you drown, you reach for that lifesaver and you want to save yourself. I think that\u2019s really what, ultimately, getting married was for me. One last attempt to save myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cyrus added that she wasn\u2019t living a \u201cfairy-tale\u201d that many people thought she was during her relationship with the Australian actor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that time, my experimentation with drugs and booze and the circle of people around me was not fulfilling or sustainable or ever going to get me to my fullest potential and purpose,\u201d the former Disney star told the magazine.<\/p>\n

Cyrus added that the world\u2019s perception of her \u2014 based on her appearance or relationship status \u2014 is often incorrect.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Hair\u2019s long and blond, she\u2019s sane right now. She cannot be f\u2014ked up on drugs. It\u2019s when her hair is painted or she\u2019s growing out her armpit hair [that] she\u2019s on drugs. \u2026 She\u2019s got a man. She\u2019s living in a house playing wife.\u2019 Dude, I was way more off my path at that time than any of the times before where my sanity was being questioned,\u201d she explained. \u201cI don\u2019t like ever saying anything in a very solid concrete way, but right now I have been focusing on sobriety as I wanted to wake up 100 percent, 100 percent of the time. If I\u2019ve ever learned to balance myself and to not take it too far, I would. But so far any time I\u2019ve messed with that, it hasn\u2019t gotten me what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n
