The actress died of complications from COVID-19, New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell shared in a\u00a0statement\u00a0<\/a>on Friday.<\/p>\n

“Carol Sutton was practically the Queen of New Orleans theater, having graced the stages across the city for decades. The world may recognize her from her performances in movies and on TV \u2014 whether it’s ‘Treme’ or ‘Claws,’ or ‘Runaway Jury’ or ‘Queen Sugar’\u00a0\u2014 but we will always remember her commanding stage presence, her richly portrayed characters, and the warm heart she shared with her fellow cast and crew in productions such as ‘4000 Miles’ and ‘A Raisin in the Sun.’ May she rest in God’s perfect peace,”\u00a0Cantrell added in their statement.<\/p>\n

After making her acting debut in the late 1960s in Dashiki Project Theatre productions, Sutton starred in dozens of productions such as\u00a0The Last Madam<\/em>,\u00a0Native Tongues<\/em>, and\u00a0A Raisin in the Sun<\/em>. Her television credits include\u00a0The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman<\/em>,\u00a0Trem\u00e9<\/em>,\u00a0True Detective\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Lovecraft Country<\/em>. She has also held roles in film such as\u00a0Steel Magnolias<\/em>,\u00a0Ray<\/em>,\u00a0Monster’s Ball<\/em>,\u00a0The Last Exorcism<\/em>,\u00a0Poms\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Help<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Ava DuVernay, creator of the OWN series\u00a0Queen Sugar<\/em>,\u00a0tweeted<\/a>: “It was our honor to welcome this veteran actress of stage and screen to our show as Aunt Martha in Episode 409, ‘Stare at the Same Fires.’ May she rise and rest in peace and power.”<\/p>\n

Survivors include a son, Archie; a daughter, Aunya; a brother, Oris Buckner; a sister, Adrienne Jopes; and five grandchildren.<\/p>\n
