Halloween\u201d filmmaker\u00a0David Gordon Green<\/a>\u00a0is in talks to direct a sequel to \u201cThe Exorcist\u201d from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Productions.<\/p>\n

The new film would continue the profitable relationship between the filmmaker and Blumhouse following 2018\u2019s \u201cHalloween\u201d (which earned $255 million on a $10 million budget), the upcoming \u201cHalloween Kills\u201d (slated for an October 2021 release<\/a>) and the new trilogy\u2019s final film \u201cHalloween Ends.\u201d Green co-wrote, produced and directed the three \u201cHalloween\u201d films, which serve as the 11th, 12th and 13th films in the franchise that made icons of Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers.<\/p>\n

The original \u201cExorcist\u201d film \u2014 starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Max von Sydow \u2014 was directed by William Friedkin. The 1973 release went on to earn $193 million at the box office and ultimate cult status among fans, in addition to the adapted screenplay Oscar for author William Peter Blatty. Among the film\u2019s 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture, were acting nods for Burstyn, Blair and Jason Miller and a best director nom for Friedkin.<\/p>\n

In the intervening decades, the \u201cExorcist\u201d series has grown to include four more entries \u2014 1977\u2019s \u201cThe Exorcist II: The Heretic,\u201d 1990\u2019s \u201cThe Exorcist III,\u201d 2004\u2019s \u201cExorcist: The Beginning\u201d and 2005\u2019s \u201cDominion: Prequel to the Exorcist.\u201d In August 2020, reports broke that Morgan Creek was in development on a theatrical reboot of \u201cThe Exorcist,\u201d set for release in 2021. On Dec 17,\u00a0Friedkin confirmed that he would not be involved in this new film, addressing (and dismissing<\/a>) internet rumors via Twitter.<\/p>\n

Observer<\/a>\u00a0was first to report the news that Green would take the helm of the legendary horror property. The director is repped by CAA.<\/p>\n
