Warner Bros. has announced release dates for three of its upcoming films: George Miller\u2019s \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d prequel, titled \u201cFuriosa<\/a>\u201d; a musical adaptation of \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d; and the family film \u201cCoyote vs. Acme.\u201d All three films will debut in theaters in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cFuriosa,\u201d starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, has been set for June 23. The live-action\/ animation hybrid \u201cCoyote vs. Acme\u201d is debuting on July 21 and \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d will release around the holidays on Dec. 20.<\/p>\n

Earlier in December, Warner Bros. shared plans to premiere its entire 2021 slate \u2014 including \u201cThe Matrix 4,\u201d \u201cDune\u201d and \u201cThe Suicide Squad\u201d \u2014 simultaneously on the company\u2019s streaming service HBO Max and in movie theaters. The studio called the unprecedented release strategy, one that drew criticism from all corners of Hollywood, a \u201cunique one-year\u201d model in response to the pandemic. Wednesday\u2019s announcement suggests that Warner Bros. intends to continue its commitment to theatrical releases.<\/p>\n

Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will join Taylor-Joy in \u201cFuriosa,\u201d which takes place before 2015\u2019s sci-fi epic \u201cMad Max: Fury Road.\u201d Miller, the filmmaker behind 1979\u2019s \u201cMad Max\u201d and its three sequels, is returning to direct, write and produce \u201cFuriosa,\u201d along with his longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell.<\/p>\n

Dave Green is directing \u201cCoyote vs. Acme,\u201d centering on the age-old rivalry between Wile E. Coyote and his preferred mail order supplier. \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d director James Gunn is co-writing the screenplay, based on Ian Frazier\u2019s fictional New Yorker magazine article of the same name. Chris DeFaria and Gunn will produce, the latter under his company Two Monkeys, A Goat and Another, Dead, Monkey production banner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Color Purple\u201d is being adapted from the Tony-winning musical and 1985 film. Blitz Bazawule is directing the upcoming version, which will be produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg. The film, which has yet to be cast, tells the story of Celie, a Black woman living in the South in the early 20th century who learns her self-worth through the help of two friends.<\/p>\n

Spielberg directed the original film adaptation of \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d in the \u201980s, which starred Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Winfrey. The coming-of-age story, adapted from Alice Walker\u2019s 1982 novel, was turned into a Broadway musical in 2005.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
