It’s showtime, baby!<\/p>\n

The Weeknd<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has officially\u00a0<\/strong>kicked off the\u00a02021 Super Bowl Halftime Show<\/a>\u00a0on a high note. Not that fans would expect anything less from his highly anticipated performance considering\u00a0he previously revealed he put his own money<\/a>\u2014$7 million, to be exact\u2014into the production.<\/p>\n

All eyes were on the 30-year-old star, whose real name is\u00a0Abel Tesfaye<\/strong>, on Sunday, Feb. 7. Whether you were at home or one of the lucky few to attend the NFL game in-person, the “Save Your Tears” singer most certainly stole the show.<\/p>\n

The musician got people out of their seats\u00a0with his futuristic-looking set.\u00a0Looking suave with his signature get-up (a glimmering red blazer and a black button-down shirt with matching slacks),\u00a0he kicked things off with his chart-topping tune, “Starboy” and quickly crooned to “The Hills.”<\/p>\n

The Weeknd also performed “I Can’t Feel My Face,” “I Feel It Coming,” “Save Your Tears” and “Earned It.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Despite this year’s game looking different due to the\u00a0coronavirus pandemic<\/a>,\u00a0the artist made\u00a0lemonade out of lemons. He took up a whole section of the stadium and performed in the stands\u2014a first\u2014with a band and dance crew in the background.<\/p>\n

He also graced the football field and performed “Blinding Lights” with\u00a0dancers dressed similarly to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Ahead of his performance, the “Blinding Lights” singer spoke to\u00a0Billboard<\/a><\/em>\u00a0about why it was important for him to make this Super Bowl Halftime Show extra special. Hint: Knowing people have been cooped up inside due to COVID-19, he wanted to make sure people felt like they were being transported.<\/p>\n

As the musician put it, “We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The Weeknd’s performance is the second to be curated by\u00a0Jay-Z<\/a><\/strong>‘s Roc Nation.<\/p>\n

Moreover, this marks the first time\u00a0a\u00a0Black artist\u00a0has helmed the Halftime Show\u00a0since\u00a0Jay-Z scored a partnership with the NFL<\/a>\u00a0in 2019, in which he became the\u00a0“live music entertainment strategist” for the league.\u00a0Last year, the rapper enlisted\u00a0Jennifer Lopez<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Shakira<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0the Super Bowl Halftime Show performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Back in November,\u00a0The Blueprint<\/em>\u00a0star raved\u00a0over the singer, saying, “The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own. His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry.”<\/p>\n

“This is an extraordinary moment in time,” Jay continued, “and the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.”<\/p>\n

Additionally, the\u00a0“Can’t Feel My Face” singer expressed his excitement over the coveted gig.<\/p>\n

“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position,” he shared in a statement at the time. “I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
