The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) began promoting his fourth studio album in November 2019, when he unveiled his red-jacketed alter ego in the music video for the lead single, \u201cHeartless.\u201d The character\u2019s appearance became more striking \u2014 and mutilated \u2014 as the era went on, with a bloodied face on the album\u2019s cover in March 2020, a fully bandaged head at the American Music Awards in November and\u00a0the use of prosthetics<\/a>\u00a0to represent plastic surgery in the \u201cSave Your Tears\u201d video released in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all a progression,\u201d the three-time Grammy winner told\u00a0Variety<\/em>. \u201cWe watch the character\u2019s story line hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to critics who wondered why The Weeknd would do such a thing during his most successful album cycle yet, he explained that \u201cbeing attractive isn\u2019t important to me but a compelling narrative is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Toronto native seemingly marked the final chapter of his\u00a0After Hours<\/em>\u00a0era on Sunday with his Super Bowl performance, during which his face was back to normal but his signature jacket was still on. He did much of his 14-minute set from the stands of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, while running through hits including \u201cStarboy,\u201d \u201cThe Hills,\u201d \u201cI Feel It Coming\u201d and \u201cEarned It\u201d before making his way to the field with a massive group of bandaged backup dancers surrounding him.<\/p>\n

The high-energy performance at the sporting event marked the biggest milestone in The Weeknd\u2019s career thus far, fulfilling a goal he had since childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all grow up watching the world\u2019s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position,\u201d the \u201cIn Your Eyes\u201d crooner said in a\u00a0statement released by the NFL<\/a>\u00a0in November 2020. \u201cI\u2019m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Weeknd later revealed that he\u00a0used $7 million of his own money<\/a>\u00a0to set up a stage in the stands, keeping social distancing guidelines in mind amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was tough to bring the vision to life with what we had at the time. We really wanted to be safe,\u201d he said on the NFL Network on Sunday morning. \u201cWe really thought about the players and the workers, so we built the stage within the actual stadium.\u201d<\/p>\n
