Meghan Markle<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is getting candid about her previous suicidal ideation.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0Oprah Winfrey<\/strong>‘s interview with Meghan and\u00a0Prince Harry<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on Sunday, March 7, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that while she was a member of the royal family, she had expressed to a senior aide she was having “suicidal thoughts,” and the person declined to assist her in seeking help.<\/p>\n

“I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially because I know how much loss he’s suffered,” Meghan said. “But I knew that if I didn’t say it, then I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. That was clear and real and frightening and constant thought.”<\/p>\n

She continued, “I remember how he just cradled me. And I went to the institution, and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help. I said that, ‘I’ve never felt this way before, and I need to go somewhere.’ And I was told that I couldn’t, that it wouldn’t be good for the institution.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Meghan added that this message came from “one of the most senior people.” She shared, “I remember this conversation like it was yesterday, because they said, ‘My heart goes out to you, because I see how bad it is, but there’s nothing we can do to protect you, because you’re not a paid employee of the institution.'”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

When Oprah asked to clarify that Meghan was “having suicidal thoughts” and thinking of harming herself, Meghan answered, “Yes.\u00a0This was very, very clear.\u00a0And, you know, I didn’t know who\u00a0to even turn to in that.\u00a0And one of the people that I\u00a0reached out to, who’s continued\u00a0to be a friend and confidant,\u00a0was one of my husband’s mom’s\u00a0best friends, one of\u00a0Diana<\/strong>‘s\u00a0best friends.\u00a0Because it’s, like, who else\u00a0could understand what\u00a0it’s actually like on the\u00a0inside?”<\/p>\n

Meghan said she was sharing this to help others who might be struggling, and said what she wants “people to remember is you have no idea what’s going on for someone behind closed doors. You have no idea.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
