<\/p>\nHilary Duff wanted her son to witness the miracle of life.<\/p>\n
The \u201cYounger\u201d star, who says she\u2019s very \u201copen and honest\u201d with her children, planned for her 9-year-old Luca to be in the room when she gave birth to daughter Mae at home last month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was kind of important for me because I\u2019m really big on being open and honest with him about how strong women are and what childbirth looks like,\u201d Duff said recently on the \u201cInformed Pregnancy\u201d podcast. \u201cHe knows all about periods and it\u2019s important for me to normalize that conversation with him for all the women that are going to be in his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duff, 33, said that while Luca \u2014 her son with ex-husband Mike Comrie \u2014 expressed his hopes to be there for Mae\u2019s birth, things ended up progressing \u201cso fast \u2026 he made it right as I was pulling the baby out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mae is the second child for Duff and singer-songwriter Matthew Koma, 33, who got married in 2019. The couple\u2019s 2-year-old daughter, Banks Violet, was not present for the birth and joined the family \u201cafter the fact.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duff, who had a water birth for both Banks and Mae after welcoming Luca at the hospital, said she hopes understanding childbirth can help guide Luca in the far-off future if he has his own children.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want him to someday when he\u2019s ready to have a child with his partner or wife or whatever, I want him to be able to respect the way that she wants to be able to have a baby, and if that\u2019s at home, that can be at home, if that\u2019s in a hospital, it will be hospital,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s many different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAs for who was in the room during Mae\u2019s birth, Duff said that Koma, her mother, three midwives, a doula\/birth photographer and a close pal were all there.<\/p>\n
During Banks\u2019 birth, Luca was able to be more present because Duff\u2019s contractions didn\u2019t intensify as quickly, the actress said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
