Taylor Swift<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has filled a major blank space in BRIT Award history.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, May 11 at the 2021 BRIT Awards\u2014the first since the U.K.’s initial lockdown last spring amid the\u00a0coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0pandemic\u2014the “champagne problems” singer accepted the Global Icon Award, making her the first woman and first non-British star to be granted\u00a0the accolade. The 31-year-old performer joined an exclusive group of Global Icon honorees, which solely includes\u00a0Elton John<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0David Bowie<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Robbie Williams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the show, Swift watched a montage of singers praising her work, including\u00a0Ed Sheeran<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Annie Lennox<\/strong>.\u00a0“Taylor is the same girl I met when I was 15,”\u00a0Selena Gomez<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0declared in the video. “She is generous and kind and cares so deeply for her fans.”\u00a0Soon after,\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>\u00a0star\u00a0Maisie Williams<\/strong>\u00a0presented the artist with the award.<\/p>\n

“I want to thank my friends and family who know exactly who they are,” Swift shared. “Whose opinion of me never changed whether my stock was up or down. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that you have to look around every day and take note of the people who have always believed in you and never stop appreciating them for it.”<\/p>\n

In true Swift fashion, the music superstar also had an inspiring message for her fans who were watching all around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

“I need you to hear me when I say that there is no career path that comes free of negativity. If you’re being met with resistance, that probably means that you’re doing something new,” she explained. “If you’re experiencing turbulence or pressure, that probably means that you’re rising and there might be times where you put your whole heart and soul into something and it is met with cynicism or skepticism. You cannot let that crush you.”<\/p>\n

Swift added, “You have to let it fuel you because we live in a world where anyone has the right to say anything they want about you at anytime. But just please remember that you have the right to prove them wrong.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

In addition to her Global Icon recognition, Swift is also up for International Female Solo Artist, along with\u00a0Ariana Grande<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Billie Eilish<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Cardi B<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Miley Cyrus<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0For the special occasion, the star made a sartorial splash in a beaded and rhinestone-embellished crop top and matching skirt from Miu Miu.<\/p>\n

Along with\u00a0her adoring fans, the beloved songwriter also has special ties to the U.K. as she’s been in a relationship with\u00a0British actor\u00a0Joe Alwyn<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0since\u00a0at least 2017<\/a>\u00a0and has since\u00a0spent plenty of quality time\u00a0across the pond<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
