<\/p>\nThe Monkees may be gearing up for their farewell tour, but don\u2019t expect Micky Dolenz to retire anytime soon.<\/p>\n
This September, the 76-year-old will reunite with Mike Nesmith, the other surviving member of the band, for the 2021 Monkees Farewell Tour. However, the musician and actor said he has zero plans to slow down.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried it once, and I got bored, so it\u2019s not in my plans right now,\u201d Dolenz recently told Closer Weekly about his retirement plans.<\/p>\n
But when asked if this is really it for The Monkees, the star said, \u201cthe short answer is yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this is the last time Mike and I will get together as The Monkees,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe questioned whether we should have even called it The Monkees. It\u2019s a different show because the other two main guys, David [Jones] and Peter [Tork] aren\u2019t with us anymore. So, yes, I think this is probably the last hurrah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nWhen \u201cThe Monkees\u201d debuted in September 1966, the group became overnight teen idols.<\/p>\n
Producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider modeled the show after The Beatles\u2019 popular musical comedies \u201cA Hard Day\u2019s Night\u201d and \u201cHelp!,\u201d seeking to create a band that would mirror them in cheekiness if not musical talent.<\/p>\n
In The Monkees iteration, Nesmith was the serious one, Jones the cute one and Dolenz the zany one.<\/p>\n
\nDuring its two-year run, \u201cThe Monkees\u201d would win an Emmy for outstanding comedy series and the group would land seven songs in Billboard\u2019s Top 10. \u201cI\u2019m a Believer,\u201d \u201cDaydream Believer\u201d and \u201cLast Train to Clarksville\u201d would reach No. 1.<\/p>\n

After the show concluded in 1968, the band went on a lengthy concert tour that at one point included Jimi Hendrix as the opening act.<\/p>\n
But music critics turned on them. They were dismissed as the PreFab Four, a mocking comparison to The Beatles.<\/p>\n
Things took a turn in the mid-1980s, thanks to TV reruns and album reissues. The Monkees gained a new, younger following, which led to reunion tours and new music.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Monkees, as a group, never made it on the TV show,\u201d Dolenz reflected on how the band continues to resonate with fans. \u201cIt was always about their struggle for success. Those struggles are the stories that tend to resonate with generations, regardless of the style, the music and the costumes of the time. It resonates and always will.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDolenz described his time filming the TV series as \u201cone big, long memory.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was only a few years, but between filming the television show 10 to 12 hours a day, then recording at night and rehearsing on weekends, it was very intense,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI remember people along the way much more than I remember moments. Co-stars like Rose Marie, who I got along with famously.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dolenz insisted that it was never a burden for him to be known solely as Micky from The Monkees.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI can\u2019t speak for anyone else,\u201d he clarified. \u201c[But] after The Monkees, I went to England and produced and directed TV shows and commercials for 15 years. I always looked at The Monkees as a blessing because it opened up so many doors for me. But you do get typecast. I\u2019ll be honest, it was a bit frustrating when I\u2019d hear that I was up for something as an actor or director and they\u2019d say, \u2018We really don\u2019t need a drummer.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c[But] \u2026 I\u2019m very grateful,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019ve been blessed my whole life. I\u2019m blessed with my children. I\u2019m blessed with my marriages \u2013 I\u2019m on my third marriage \u2013 but I\u2019ve been blessed with the women that have been in my life, the mothers of my children. And, of course, with getting cast on The Monkees.\u201d<\/p>\n
