A potential new treatment for incurable\u00a0bowel cancer<\/a>\u00a0has been identified by researchers.<\/p>\n

The medication appeared to slow the regrowth of tumours among some people in clinical trials.<\/p>\n

Researchers compared 44 patients who took the drug, adavosertib, with 25 patients who did not.<\/p>\n

They found it delayed tumour growth by about two months on average and had relatively few side effects.<\/p>\n

The drug \u2013 which is taken as a pill \u2013 had most impact in the 31 patients with left-sided\/rectal tumours, increasing overall survival, meaning patients lived longer.<\/p>\n

Lead author Dr Jenny Seligmann, of the\u00a0University of Leeds<\/a>, said: “The findings are particularly encouraging as the subset of patients involved represent a third of all bowel cancer patients and, while other patients have treatments developed specifically for their tumour types, this group currently has very limited treatment options.”<\/p>\n

That subset who took part had tumours with two common mutations, RAS and TP53.<\/p>\n

Scientists had hypothesised these mutations would make the tumours more sensitive to the drug \u2013 which works by stopping an especially harmful protein developing.<\/p>\n

Crucially, the research suggested adavosertib could benefit patients with other types of bowel cancer and also work alongside standard treatments in other lines of therapy.<\/p>\n

Now, after the apparent success, they have said the findings offer hope for patients \u2013 but also cautioned that larger trials would be needed to establish whether the drug improves survival compared with standard treatment.<\/p>\n

Co-author Professor Louise Brown, from the Clinical Trials Unit at\u00a0University College London<\/a>, said: “The results for the adavosertib arm of the trial are potentially important and represent a glimmer of hope for patients in this group.”<\/p>\n

The findings come from a large collaborative UK trial called FOCUS4 which aimed to investigate the best ways to help people with inoperable bowel cancer who have already received some chemotherapy.<\/p>\n
