The actor opened up about his and Uma Thurman’s split that happened more than a decade ago. Ethan Hawke revealed to GQ that the divorce took a huge toll on him amid one of the highest points in his career. I guess sometimes you just can’t have it all!
The two stars put an end to their marriage back in 2005 while speculations that he cheated were going around.
While the man had already been nominated at the Oscars twice, once for Training Day in 2001 and Before Sunset in 2004, Hawke is confessing that his problems in his personal life definitely affected his professional one as well.
About his first Oscar nomination, the actor told the magazine that ‘It was the best moment of my career. Like, Maybe, maybe, you could be commercially viable.’
‘But I got divorced, and my personal life fell apart. I do not know if you feel this way, but when you are depressed, it is really easy to see everything that’s fake about other people and life, and I just started seeing all of that. How phony celebrity was, how phony everything is. You channel your inner Holden Caulfield, you know?’
He recalls using his work as a way to escape his marital problems a lot, so he thinks his projects, Before Sunset in particular, that he worked on during the pair’s fallout helped him put his life ‘back together.’
‘That was the height of my marriage falling apart, and getting to spend that summer with Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater, reconnecting with a part of myself that was more…what is the right word? Idealized. A cleaner self. It was a great summer. And it helped me put myself back together.’
