When Maya Hawke got most of the way through Season 3 of “Stranger Things” — and we should warn you about a minor, semi-spoiler ahead — she began to feel like her character, Robin, wasn’t going in a direction that fit who Maya thought Robin really was. Originally, the script called for Robin and Steve to end up together after he admits he has romantic feelings for her. As Maya explained recently to WSJ (via Vulture), she and Joe Keery, who plays Steve, thought that did a disservice to Robin, who they believed was gay. “Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and Steve shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay,” Maya recalled. “Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever.” Halfway through shooting the season, Maya said she and Joe talked to the writers and showrunners, who came to agree with them. “The Duffer brothers and I, and Shawn Levy, had a lot of conversations throughout shooting and it wasn’t really until we were shooting episode four and five, I think, that we made the final decision,” she said. “It was a collaborative conversation, and I’m really, really happy with the way that it went,” adding that she hopes the change can help others “fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys.”
