Supermodel Karlie Kloss opened up about being related to the Trumps through her marriage to Josh Kushner in an interview with British Vogue, which was published on Monday.
While Kloss and her husband are Democrats, Josh’s brother Jared Kushner is married to Ivanka Trump. Jared also serves as a senior advisor to his father-in-law, President Donald Trump.
“It’s been hard,” she told the publication about her relation to the Trumps. “But I choose to focus on the values that I share with my husband, and those are the same liberal values that I was raised with and that have guided me throughout my life.”
Kloss began dating her husband seven years ago when she was 19, which was well before Trump announced his candidacy for president.
The model doesn’t often speak publicly about politics, though she indicated she voted for Donald Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 election and posted a photo from the March for Our Lives protest against school shootings in March 2018.
In her interview with British Vogue, Kloss also opened up about her decision to leave Victoria’s Secret as a model in 2015. “The reason I decided to stop working with Victoria’s Secret was I didn’t feel it was an image that was truly reflective of who I am and the kind of message I want to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful,” explained Kloss.
“I think that was a pivotal moment in me stepping into my power as a feminist, being able to make my own choices and my own narrative, whether through the companies I choose to work with, or through the image I put out to the world,” she said.
