Selena Gomez suffered panic attack before AMAs performance which viewers labelled ’embarrassing’
When Selena Gomez took to the stage during the American Music Awards last night, it was clearly not her best performance. And now insiders reveal that there was a reason for her shaky vocals inside the Microsoft Theater in LA.
According to People magazine, the 27-year-old suffered a panic attack backstage just before she was due to perform her new songs, ‘Lose You to Love Me’ and ‘Look at Her Now’. Understandable, given this was Gomez’s first live performance in two years.
“She definitely had a panic attack. She was nervous. She hasn’t been on stage in two years,” said the source. “[It happened] at the last minute. It threw her off.”
Likely adding to Gomez’s nerves was the fact her song ‘Lose You to Love Me’ is one of the biggest releases in her career. The powerful ballad is also rumoured to be about her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, who recently married model Hailey Baldwin.
“It’s an important song in her career,” explained the source of Gomez’s vulnerable new ballad. “She really wanted to deliver.”
Unfortunately, Gomez’s nerves got the better of her and trolls immediately panned her performance on Twitter, branding her vocals “off key”, “embarrassing” and “worse than 2007 Britney” — which of course refers to Spears’ disastrous performance of ‘Gimme More’ at the MTV Video Music Awards 12 years ago.
Despite the criticism, Gomez got some love from famous friends Taylor Swift and Halsey, who sent her love and air kisses from the audience. Gomez also later took to Instagram to thank her loyal fans for their support.
“Feels good to be back,” she wrote. “Thank you to my entire team and to my fans that stand by me. All of this is for you and because of you. excited for this chapter.”
