If there’s anyone working in film today who fills us with awe (and a little bit of envy) it’s Margot Robbie. The Australian actress hasn’t been working in film for long – she’s just hit 30 – but she has made an incredible impression thanks to some excellent performances, a progressive approach to the film business, and an incredible style. Now, she’s set to make waves, literally, by starring in a female-orientated reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Here’s why we can’t get enough of Margot.
She’s always made an impression…
We first became aware of Margot thanks to Neighbours, the Australian soap with a massive UK following. When she first arrived on Ramsay Street in 2008, playing Donna Freedman, she wasn’t supposed to be there long. But audiences loved her, and she was written in long-term.
Donna left the show in 2011 but, crucially, wasn’t killed off, and when she was nominated for an Oscar for I.Tonya her old castmates made her a good luck video. Could she, Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia and all of our other soap faves return for the A-List soap reunion of our dreams? Please?
She makes her own destiny
Margot has chosen some incredible roles, like The Wolf Of Wall Street, Suicide Squad and Focus, but her best work has come via LuckyChap, the production company she founded with husband Tom Ackerley and friends Sophia Kerr and Josey McNamara.
The team was behind I, Tonya, which was a big box office hit and earned Margot her first Oscar nomination. Next, she and the team reevaluated comic book villain Harley Quinn in DC’s Birds Of Prey. Expect a more three-dimensional character than the Harley we saw when Margot wasn’t involved behind the scenes.
She’s great at accents
Just ask Tina Fey, who worked with Margot on Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. ‘I was blown away by your performance in The Wolf of Wall Street’, Tina said. ‘When I heard that you weren’t American, I was like: “Are you kidding me?” – even Americans can’t do that kind of New York-specific accent.’ We agree: she’s pretty good at an English accent, too.
She’s an honorary Brit
And it’s no wonder. Margot spent much of her twenties living in a house share in Clapham, London with friends, including Tom. This meant that she could regularly be spotted at Infernos, the notoriously messy nightclub. We’re pretty sure we did shots with her at the bar once.
She’s got great style
Margot looks amazing in anything, but she’s also got some of the best designers on speed dial. Jacquemus, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta and, of course, Chanel all line her wardrobe. Jealous? Us? Of course.
We can’t wait to see what she’ll wear to the Oscars…
