Lil Nas X Says He ‘Had Plans to Work’ on Song with Miley Cyrus But ‘Then the Pandemic Happened’
Lil Nas X and Miley Cyrus, whose dad Billy Ray had previously collaborated with the rapper on the 2019 record-breaking “Old Town Road Remix” had plans to work on a song together — but the pandemic hit.
“I had plans to work on this one song with Miley earlier last year and then the pandemic happened,” Nas X, 21, told Andy Cohen Wednesday on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “We didn’t get to meet up or anything. But, you know, maybe it’ll happen now.”
Nas X’s collaboration with Billy Ray went on to become his breakout No. 1 single. To date, the fan-favorite tune holds the all-time record for most consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. With 19 weeks total, it surpassed Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s previous record holder, “One Sweet Day.” That record was initially set after the bop charted for 16 weeks, between 1995 and ’96.
Given the success of their last collab, it’s no surprise that Nas X stays in touch with his fellow hitmaker Billy Ray, 59. “The last thing I texted Billy Ray Cyrus was like, how was he doing? [It was] maybe a month or so ago.” he told Cohen, 52.
Just ahead of Christmas, the “Rodeo” star and Miley, 28, teamed up to join a festive, virtual concert series, titled Amazon Music Holiday Plays. Nas X hosted the fun-filled special, which featured outrageous sets, Q&A segments and performances
Most recently, the star released his Christmas single, “Holiday,” which he teased with Back to the Future superstar Michael J. Fox. In the suave music video — which has already amassed more than 90 million views — Nas X punningly switches gears from “horses in the back” to “reindeer in the front” of his Santa sleigh.
Chatting with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in November, he shared that he’s “felt super accomplished [since he made his music debut.] But I felt like, ‘Okay, that’s cool. Now it’s time to really get to business.’ [So,] I found better, healthier ways to create.”
