In a new essay for The Cut, Nicole Kidman reveals a different side to what women in Hollywood experience than what’s been focused on so much amid the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements. While she’s “had #MeToo moments” since childhood, Nicole says her marriage to Tom Cruise put her on safer footing than some of her peers. “Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful,” she writes. “That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection … I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.” Nicole is currently working on a new film in which she plays Gretchen Carlson, whose sexual harassment lawsuit against former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes. He ducked out of the company after her suit resulted in a wave of headlines, a massive settlement and an apology from the network.
