After making history as the first female solo artist win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, Cardi B was hit with a slew of nasty comments indicating she hadn’t deserved the award (even though she dedicated it to the late Mac Miller, whose fans were among those trashing Cardi on social media). She was clearly stunned and hurt by the response as she hopped on social media herself to explain that she had worked extremely hard on “Invasion of Privacy,” including while she was pregnant, and to list stats about the album’s positive reception. By Tuesday, Feb. 13, Cardi had taken her Instagram account down but that didn’t stop Lady Gaga for speaking out in support of the rapper, whom she was photographed chatting and laughing with at the ceremony. “It is so hard to be a woman in this industry,” tweeted Lady G. “What it takes, how hard we work through the disrespectful challenges, just to make art. I love you Cardi. You deserve your awards. Let’s celebrate her fight. Lift her up & honor her. She is brave.” Chance the Rapper, Jay Cole and other artists have also spoken out in defense of Cardi’s big win, according to E! News.
