Yesterday morning, Meghan Markle most likely looked outside and did what most of us did: picked out a spring-appropriate look to embrace the unusually warm weather in.
Arriving at the Commonwealth Youth Forum wearing an strappy Altuzarra pinstripe midi dress with a Camilla and Marc blazer, Tamara Mellon heels and a cross-body bag by Australian label, Oroton, the bride-to-be looked incredibly chic.
Taking her blazer off inside, Meghan revealed her bare shoulders – a rarity in the royal family – which has been met with huge backlash from royal family supporters.
Posting a photo of Meghan baring her shoulder on its official Instagram channel, @TheRoyalFamily, the bride-to-be has (so far) been subjected to over 800 comments, most of which condemn her outfit choice.
Many called Meghan’s outfit “inappropriate”, with some claiming she was breaking royal dress code traditions and needed to stop “dressing like a celeb”.
And they’re the nicer ones.
One user wrote: “The way MM is behaving and dressing is so embarrassing. She is clearly rebelling and doing what she wants and she is not EVEN MARRIED!”
While another steamed: “She broke a rule the dress code. She cannot show her chest. The top of the dress needs to be covered. Maybe a crew neck shirt underneath the dress black crew neck shirt.”
One even went as far to say: “This woman is the worst thing that could ever happen to the Royal Family”.
However, there were a few who praised Meghan for her outfit choice, pointing out (correctly) that the Duchess of Cambridge and the late Princess Diana have worn shoulder-baring and strappy dresses in their time.
“People who say MM dressed inappropriately by exposing her shoulders or she is not dressing royal is full of crap because Princess Diana bared her shoulders all the time and it wasn’t just formal functions,” one said.
Another said she was perfect for her royal role: “Meghan looked absolutely gorgeous at the event. Her work ethic, intelligence, personable demeanour, and degree in International Studies makes her a perfect choice to support the Commonwealth.”
Not sure about you, but we think she looks incredible. And as long as she’s comfortable and happy with her fashion choices, everyone else should be.
