HBO released the opening trailer for Season 2 of Big Little Lies and it looks like we are in for another exciting year. The clip confirms that all of our favorite moms of Otter Bay are back in action and now go by the title of “Monterey Five” Here’s everything fans need to know about the new season.
It was tricky enough getting the all-star cast of Big Little Lies back together for another season, but not everyone is returning for the sophomore year. While director Jean-Mar Vallee did an amazing job in Season 1, he will not be helming any episodes in Season 2.
Vallee, of course, has plenty of projects on his plate, including his recent miniseries with Amy Adams, Sharp Objects.
It will be interesting to compare the differences between the first two seasons now that Vallee has stepped down. The critically acclaimed director is being replaced by Andrea Arnold, who is best known for her work on Fish Tank, American Honey, and Transparent.
Alexander Skarsgard’s character, Perry, met his demise in last season’s finale, but fans will be introduced to his mother, played by Meryl Streep, this season.
Streep’s character is looking to get to the bottom of her son’s death and is trying to connect with her grandchildren. This will undoubtedly put Streep in quite a few scenes with Nicole Kidman, which is going to be amazing television.

One of the biggest things to glean from the trailer, meanwhile, is the fact that so many of the characters are now rocking glorious bangs. According to The Cut, the only characters that had bangs in Season 1 were Celeste (Kidman) and Ed (Adam Scott). In season 2, however, fans will see the amount of bangs double as both Streep and Shailene Woodley, who plays Jane, opted for the new look.
Season 2 of Big Little Lies is scheduled to premiere June 9 on HBO.
