Brie Larson is one of the world’s most popular actresses, especially for her character Captain Marvel and her appearance in Avengers: Endgame. She’s won an Oscar and stars as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel but not everyone thinks she’s the right person for the job. In fact, there’s a new petition that says she should step down from the position and be replaced. Those behind the petition and the movement against Brie, say she should be replaced by an LGBTQ person of color.
The petition has gone viral and has almost reached its goal of 17,000 signatures. Right now, Brie is so popular she holds the top spot on IMDB’s star meter (used to rank the popularity of certain actors and actresses in regards to how many times they are searched on the site).
Captain Marvel was an incredible success. The Disney/Marvel movie filmed with a budget of $153 million and brought home $1.12 billion worldwide. It was the year’s biggest movie before Avengers: Endgame. It’s doubtful that with that type of box office success, Disney would want to mess with the movie and do something as drastic as replacing Larson.
Still, the petition has gone viral and people are adding their voices and calling for her replacement. The petition states the following.
“We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role. Let Monica, the original female & BLACK Captain Marvel instead of white-washing characters for the benefit of the straight, white men running Disney. She hasn’t donated money to any charity other than The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation (look to the stars) and it’s time for her to show she is not all-talk.”

Brie Larson called for more inclusivity when she was doing press junkets for Captain Marvel’s promotion. She felt there weren’t enough people of color being included in interviews and instead felt the majority of those interviewing her were white males. She said there was enough room to not only let the white males do their jobs while adding more people of color to the mix.
Now, people are signing petitions saying if Brie Larson truly cares about social justice, she should step down and give her role to a black LGBTQ woman.
