Engaged actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have become parents to a baby boy.
The fiercely private couple hit headlines in May amid rumours suggesting the stars were expecting their first child, and on Sunday, it was revealed they had quietly welcomed a son in August, and named him after the Joker star’s late brother, River Phoenix.
Russian director Victor Kossakovsky announced the happy news during a question and answer session at the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland, as he explained why Phoenix was unable to attend a weekend screening of their documentary Gunda, which he had executive produced.
“He just got a baby, by the way… A beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote it (the film) now,” Kossakovsky shared.
Representatives for Phoenix and Mara have yet to comment on the baby’s arrival.
The actors first met while filming 2013’s Her and fell in love on the set of biblical drama Mary Magdalene in 2016. They became engaged last year. Actor River Phoenix died from a drug overdose in 1993, aged just 23.
