Dangerous Liaisons: Starz Orders Prequel Series Based on Classic Novel

Starz is exploring some classic literature. Deadline reports the network has ordered a TV series based on the novel Dangerous Liaisons.

A prequel series, the historical drama “explores the world of the French aristocracy shortly before the French revolution.” Christopher Hampton, who previously adapted Dangerous Liaisons for the 1988 film, will executive produce the Starz series.

Starz has ordered eight episodes of Dangerous Liaisons. Harriet Warner will write and serve as showrunner while Flame Ventures and Playground Entertainment will produce.
From Playground Entertainment’s Colin Callender:

In Harriet Warner’s brilliantly re-imagined world of Dangerous Liaisons the character of Merteuil is placed center stage as a woman quietly challenging the status quo of sexual politics, holding others to account, particularly for the abuse of sexual power and male privilege. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, a story about the claiming of female power in a world where women are objects of male domination feels strikingly timely and powerfully relevant.”
