Netflix has cancelled Messiah after just one season.
Actor Wil Traval, who plays Will Mathers in the US thriller series, shared the news on his Instagram account on Wednesday (March 25).
“It’s a very sad day today,” he wrote. “I have just received news from Netflix that there will be no season 2 of #messiah. I wanted to say to all the fans thank you for your support and love. I wish things were different.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix didn’t feel confident enough to produce another season of the show, largely because of the impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on the world.
The series follows a CIA agent (Michelle Monaghan) who investigates a man (Mehdi Dehbi) attracting international attention and followers who believe him to be the second coming of Jesus due to his supposed ability to perform miracles.
Fans will no doubt be disappointed to see the series come to a premature end, especially since the first season ended on such a major cliffhanger – that the potential Jesus figure, Al-Masih, actually does have supernatural powers.
reator Michael Petroni even teased that he had at least one more season planned. “I’ve got a good idea,” he told Collider. “There are a couple of seasons, where I absolutely know where the show goes.
“It’s interesting because it was a such a massive undertaking to do this season, and yet when we finished editing it and we sat down and watched it, we got to the end of it and it felt like just the beginning. It really did. It was almost daunting to me that it felt like the beginning of the story.”
